454 tall

i have a freind that has a 454 tall block brand new never used hell sell me for 75 bucks, my question w/some modding on the frame can an 89 t-top support it, and also will it fit if i did?

I've heard of a short and long block, but never a tall block.

Only $75, I'd buy it even if it doesn't fit. You'll need suspension upgrades including some SFCs.

I didn't know there was a 454 tall block, only 427 and 366 ones... what year is it from?

Ssince the deck is .400" taller on each side, that means the heads are about ¼" farther apart and about ¼" higher... seems like that would just add a little extra squeeze to the header and hood clearance issue.

But it might go, be brave, be the first to try and let the rest of us know how it fits.

Never heard of a 454 tall block. 427 and 366 tall deck blocks were used in 2 ton trucks. I would pass on installing it in a thirdgen.

No such thing as a factory tall deck 454. It's probably a 427. The 427 tall deck block is the same bore as a 454 but a shorter stroke. You can put the 454 crank into the 427 block and "make" a 454 tall deck. The 427 block can be bored out .125". Installing a stroker crank you can easily make a 496.

The reason the 366 and 427 truck blocks are tall deck is that the pistons have an extra compression ring. This make the cylinder requirements to be .400" longer.

As for installing it into a third gen I'd also suggest getting a short deck block. If you plan on keeping stuff under the hood such as a wiper motor and heater/AC then a tall deck block will probably cause a lot of interferance problems.

You can buy a 4.5" bore short deck block, throw a stroker crank into it and make a 540.

Tall deck blocks can be a pain. Regular intake manifolds won't fit without special spacers. A longer oil pump drive shaft is required. Longer pushrods are required. Everything needed for the extra .400" height. Using headers may not work since the exhaust ports are in a different position compared to a short deck block. Hooker Supercomps are hard enough to install on a short deck block.

They do have tall deck 454's i have 1. alot of the tall blocks were used in the boats and came with steel cranks and 4bolt mains.

and they also have oval ports. there were none made in factory vehicles but some rv's and other heavy vehicles had them. but mostly in boats
