engine picking

Im pulling my motor to do some engine bay ad motor freshening. i went through all the trouble today of disconnecting the tranny and getting the motor ready to be pulled only to find that my cherry picker cant reach safely above the motor. It reaches about where the fan meets the pully. It looks as if it wont reach because ive got the car on ramps. Now i cant take the car off the ramps because of the tranny and other things being held underneath by jacks and what not. I was thinking my only other option would be to take the front clip off. anyone got any ideas so i dont have to remove the clip..if not....could you quickly run throught the removal of the clip....ive never done it before
Thanks...

As I see it, the easiest options would be to either remove the jacks and lower the car, or get a taller picker or chainfall attached to a gantry or solid beam in the garage (the standard ceiling joist or bottom cord on a truss doesn't qualify for the latter). Removing the front end sheet metal is going to be a lot more unnecessary work. It would be easier to disassemble the engine in the car and lift out only the short block if necessary than to remove the sheet metal.

this may sound obvious but, the boom on the engine lift slides out to extend the reach of the hoist, when I pulled my motor to replace it I had the car on blocks and bricks (with jackstands too) and had no problem reaching the lift area. I also had to extend the boom to reach the engine. may be worth a look.

You could drop the k member and "lift" the front of the
car of of the drive train...

six bolts for the k member... six more for some bracketeria

This is reasonable if a front end rebuild is part of the plan
(bushings, steering linkage etc.) otherwise it might be too
much trouble...

That happened to me once! The darned rented engine hoist hadn't been properly maintained and serviced by the rental shop. It was down on hydraulic fluid and wouldn't lift that last 2 inches or so to get the engine over the front of the car. We ended up letting all the air out of the tires in order to pull the motor

Needless to say, when they wanted more money because we were late getting the hoist back, we gave them a piece of our mind and left with our cash in pocket
