How do you guys do it???

Hi guys,
I see so many of you that have swapped engines or whatever, and done away with that cluster f**k of vacuum lines and other B.S. underneath the hood. I just want to throw up when I see the miles of lines under my hood! How the hell do you get rid of all of that??? Is all the emissions stuff right out the window? I just cringe at the idea that I'm going to be replacing my cylinder heads later this month, and I'm going to have to disconnect and then reconnect all of that!!!! What's the secret???

simple... pop the hood and look around... If it isnt absolutly essentiial for the engines operation, pull it and toss it over your sholder. Things like smog, ac, and some of the efe crap are some of the first marked targets to be pulled. Do be sure you know in advance what you are pulling and how to efectivly by-pass its operation.

It's not that simple. You don't want to get rid of vacuum lines or grounds. Also, coming out of the passenger fender well, there are a bunch of wires. I left them alone, and took out the heater box, and tucked them under it. It helps to have a test lite too.

A/C adds a ton of clutter in the engine compartment. I never had it in my car ('85 IROC) and I can see the ground all around the engine.

i dont see how the ac adds a ton of clutter its just a big pulley/compresseor and one or two lines feedin off of it. its not a bad problem in mine. in mine i have all of the emission crap from the 305. i am afraid to pull anything but once i get my new gauges i wont be afraid of pullin things. i want to run all new wires for ignition and gauges so i figured i wont need anything

It was simple for me... You just have to make sure you know ABSOLUTLY for sure what the stuff your ripping out does/goes and isnt essential or will cause problems. I only took out the crap that got in the way, the canister and a few out of the way items i just left in. Obviously, you dont want to f too much with the wire looms if you still have a cc carb, thats a recipie for disaster.

One of the main things i dont like about ac other then the lines is the fact that there is a condensor blocing airflow through the radiator. This is a problem if you have another more powerful engine and you still have the stock radiator. Plus it also wastes gas and makes the engine work harder.

I was woundering the same thing I just change the fuel pump in my 84 ta lg4 and was cussing the smog pump the whole time. If I was to remove it and take out the line coming from it and plug all the holes would the computer be afected in any way. I know on my monte carlo I cant even mess with the radio with out having problems with the computer but its a lot newer. Just woundering what the computer is monitoring in these older cars.

to me it's sort of like the "can't see the forest for all the trees" sort of thing. if you take it one piece, part, subassemby, system at a time it becomes a lot simpler to get back together. a few pics, labels, a good manual, and some common sense and clear thinking helps out a lot.

I already had the AC unit out, but when we started cleanin up the rest of the engine bay, you'd be surprised how many wires went to it..

i'd leave the a/c alone if it's in good working order right now. all it is is the compressor and some a/c lines - not too much in the way. what you can get rid of for sure is the evap canister. it won't hurt anything to have it unplugged and/or the hoses disconnected, so toss it. just make sure you cap off the lines the evap hoses connect to. other than that, there's not much you can do without.

I was just told by several people to leave the one big line goin to the evap can open, not capped.
