carb. spitting when takeing off ( sluggish)

I have a 85 TA. Its a 350, Eldabrock carb, factory dis., and a comp.cams 268 cam. when i floor it takeing off. It is very weak and will backfire thruo carb. But when Im going about 55 or so it does decent. Sometimes it will still backfire throu carb. Does this mostly when its cold. Just rebuilt this engine and has done it ever since. What do i need to check. Carb. diss. valves or what. It is very embarsing to drive.

doe sit make pop pop pop noise at idle ? if so the inspect cam lobes,

if not then probably need timing adjustment or distributor work
or wires are touching something not good, make sure engine grounds are all n place too,

good luck

It is a brand new cam. It starts right up. If the timeing was of would it still crank good? What kind oy dis. work would I look for. It is a stock HEI. It doesnt pop at idle. Just when you take off or floor it. But mostly when takeing off. And is very waek taking off. Thanks,

Sounds like your timing is too retarded.

I'd look for a huge vacuum leak. Thats probably the problem. Usually a vacuum leak will cause idle problems and somewhat dissapear when your pulling more vacuum or into the throttle at 0 vacuum.

Get your timing set right first. If you stilll have a problem:
When you say it's cold, are you talking about the engine or the outside temp. Carbs don't work the best until the engine is fully warmed up(the choke is what you need to look at if it's just a cool engine problem) and you should be at WOT until the engine is warm anyway. Then, did you do any tuning after you installed the new engine? Every engine is unique in how much fuel it needs and when it needs it. It could be you need additional fuel from the accelerator pump, or more fuel overall.

What these guys said. Also check your plug wires. I know when one of mine was burnt it did the same thing only when the engine was cool.

It does it mainly when the engine is cold, but it does it all time just not as bad when it warms up. It is sluggish every time I take off warm or cold. I had the carb adjusted and new plugg wires. I had a vacum leak but fixed it and it stil does this.
