Not a Thirdgen but a good question.

I have a 2001 Biuck Regal with just a plain 3.8 motor.I wanted to put a open element on it,but when I took out the air filter assembly I discovered what looks like a computer. Is this a computer? What would be a cheap way to convert this to an open element and protect this computer without buying some kit that may cost some big bucks?

2001 Regal ? Have you got a pic of that motor. I'll find one on the net if I can but an open element on a 2001? Hell I guess anything is possible.

Is this it? And is this the type of air filter you want?

A computer?

What you probably saw is part of the mass air sensor. Theres probably also an air temp sensor in there somewhere.

I wouldnt run an open element. Just get a better flowing air filter, and remove any air silencer they probably have on the side of the filter away from the engine side.

Thats a mighty big sensor. It is as big as my computer in my Firebird. Thanks for the pics Redbird and that's what I want. It's just that big sensor I'm worried about.I want to know what to do with it if I take that filter assembly out or do you have to relocate it.

Interesting... I wasnt aware that they were putting computers under the hood like Dodge was. Never seen GM do that besides the Corvette.

Still dont see the point in an open element filter.

Off topic but apperently GM found out that the under hood temps are lower then under the dashboard in the summer so they moved the pcm's under the hood, so i hear.

I'm not sure about the Regal GS, but since it's the same engine and body platform as the Grand Prix, then it's in the air cleaner box.

I read an article in Pontiac Performers or Pontiac Performance, or something like that and they did a build up of one of those S/C 3.8's. The air cleaner kit they bought came with a special seperate box to put the ECM in to protect it from the elements.

I thought it was strange to see it under the hood, but to put it in the air cleaner box? I guess the inlet for the box brings in cool, outside air, so it would keep the ECM cooler, right? Especially on those -20* days here in IL.
