Worst Running Thirdgen on the Board
Sorry to all you competitors of my title, but i definately have the WORST running thirdgen. Well actually it runs fine. Idle doesn't move all around and all that, it just is really out of tune. Most out of tune thirdgen maybe? Well, it does need a rebuild and it had puzzled everyone that ever looked at my sig. "16.45! That should be the stock time! WTF? You have all that work done too? Did you do it wrong? Seriously WTF???" So i decided that i have a bad engine/tranny/gears. Well, oh well. I'm just going to put more work into it. Maybe after $5,000 that would normally get a 305 into the 14's, i might be able to hit a high 15. We'll see.
Any suggestions?

Have you done a compression check?
Just curious. My 305 TPI isn't too fast really. My friends 2001 V6 golf GTI (180 horses, about a 16.0 1/4) was able to pull on me a bit, maybe a car length at the end of a 1/4 mile.
I did finally replace my transmission, and the car feels and drives ten times as good, and as a bonus, it actually shifts down into 1st gear when i hit about 6-8 mph. (old tranny never did that, i realized)
So a slipping tranny can also hurt times too im sure.

My thirdgen is pretty much stock. It has new exhaust and that's about it. The damn thing is pretty quick.

Does a "running" third gen count if it can start? Cause I may have the worst then. My uncle decided to tinker with it and I think he just destroyed it. He's only had it at his house for a day now!

well Christos, i hope to rebuild my tranny and engine by the time spring break is over, and maybe i'll be a bit faster. The car has to RUN to be considered running. If it just starts and then stalls, and it doesn't count. Sorry.

I'm blowing black smoke everywhere and have horrible exhaust fumes that make me wreak after driving around the block, and am getting gallons to the mile.

that's pretty bad Jim and Fyrelance and Fattie. I don't know. My car runs perfect, it's just not fast. It will run for hours fine and everything but there's no power. Maybe worst running 305?

No matter how much I love performance I will *NEVER* delete my AC. I just thought I would add that.

I took my stock LG4, with 124k miles on it, from 17.65 1st run (bad fuel pump) to 16.80 tweeked out. Don't forget the altitude; at sea level those would be 16.37 & 15.58 (altitude factor is .9276 for 5800'). Things that were changed along the way: Fuel pump (stock replacement, that alone got me to 17.2's), air cleaner (open element), rods, hanger, emptying trunk, tire pressure, ignition timing, intake manifold. I guess I should mention that I started out with a 2-3/4" GTA take-off cat-back.
Oh, I'm still using that same replacement fuel pump and rods & hanger in the current configuration. Engine (shortblock) & tranny have 152k miles on them now.
The high mileage on your car isn't helping you any. But, improvements can be had by doing the "little things".

AC is so nice I miss it. I took mine out last winter because it didnt really work anyways. I really missed it this summer when it was 100 degrees outside. Oh well it wasnt to bad at night and plus summer is about over....BRING THE SNOW.
My old 305 (190k miles) with the mods listed in my sig except for the fuel pump and the intake manifold ran a best of 17.0 at 300 ft. above sea level. I'm starting to think that my transmission may be part of it.
