how much peformance could i expect out of this cam? How much is it and where should i buy it? Would it be too big for my car? I know there is a smaller version. Thanks.

It's not too big for your 305. However, that is a lot of miles on that engine to be throwin in a nice healthy cam. If you do get it, you better get new springs. I'm not sure what the experts will say, but that is a lot of miles regardless if you get new springs to be throwin in that cam.

Then, assuming you have what's in your sig, they'll tell you to use an XE 256.

Even though I feel that COmp (and the other cam mfrs for that matter) tend to be on the conservative side in their cam picks, I'd be inclined to agree with their recommendation in this case. Your car simply isn't set up for as much cam as the 262.
With some gears and a converter, or a stick shift, you could possibly use it. But what will happen is you'll lose some bottom end, so the car will be even doggier off the line than it is now; and by the time your engine winds up into its peak torque range, it will have taken 20 seconds and you'll be doing about 100 mph. Then it will be about time to shift out of first, and it will nose over again. You won't like it.

Hmm, do you guys think my compression right now at 8.5:1 is hurting me with my comp 268XE , not as in hey get new heads and you'll be a lot faster, but as in hurting my times.

I don't think so Mark simply because you have 3.73 gears. That will let you get into the engine's powerband in a hurry. If you had 2.73s it would be a different story.
You really ought to buy F-Bird88's heads for the price he's offering them at! You'd really fly with those babies on there

Matt,
The single best mod you can do for your car right now would be a set of 3.42 gears. Or, if you seldom venture out on the highway and have lots of gas money, a set of 3.73s.
Your car will feel completely different because everything you've already done will now be allowed to work at its optimum.

I have to tell you that compared to what F-Bird is offering you, Dart Iron Eagles are a gross waste of your precious student cash. You will pay $800 for them and not have any more than 5 additional hp over the well ported 305 heads.
I know what these 305 heads can do. Is another 5 or so hp worth $400 to you?
Me neither.
I think you are so busy getting your post count over 10000 that your brain has fallen out. F-Bird offered you an excellent deal and you don't even remember it

Sorry, I know some experts told me I would be wasting my money on 305 heads just to get some higher compre. I'll get back to fbird though, I'm still waitin to find out about the deal I might be able to get at home, still haven't heard what the casting #s are though.

What is a head? It is a fuel and air delivery system for the engine. There are no major differences between 305 heads and 350 heads, other than combustion chamber size and port volume. The 305 chamber is precisely what you need with your low compression engine and the port runner volume is opened up to flow really well by his method of porting them.
This is not some great mystery that only the experts can understand. Though a lot of them would like you to think so.

- 20 hp just from porting and polishing. Standard Abrasives proved that.
- another 10 hp from the larger intake valves and bowl blending
- between 10 and 15 more hp from the increase in compression due to the smaller combustion chamber
Total = 40 to 45 hp almost guaranteed.

These 84 hp heads would also have to have VERY tiny combustion chambers to get your 8.5:1 ratio up to 10:1.
Vortec heads use 1.94 valves and they'll support 450 hp. So will the 305 heads because they flow the same as the Vortecs when he's done with them.

I dont' see why a great set of heads couldn't get me 384hp if I wanted.
Since I have a nice healthy cam, slap on some heads there we go. Or am I missing something. Cause it's not hard to build 350+ HP with a 350 with my cam/intake combo.

That's just the nature of the beast and I think we are being generous here.
If you were turning 8000 or 9000 rpm, like the nascar boys, then the equation might differ. But not on the street.

With what you have in your engine now, and adding a good set of heads like F-Bird's, you'll be at 350 hp at least. Maybe even 360 to 370 hp.

Thus your 350 hp engine will have a net power rating of about 325 hp or so when you subtract the parasitic loss the water pump, alternator, etc. Subtract another 20% for loss through the drivetrain and you have about 260 rear wheel hp. That should put you comfortably into the 13s.

There IS a dividing line between acceptable street performance and a basically strip-only car.
Less than 6000 rpm puts you firmly in the street category. Do you want something you can actually drive, or are you just more interested in a rumpity-rump dragster that is fundamentally USELESS for your everyday purposes?
Seems to me a student ought to be worried about his car getting him to class and back

For me, having a hot little daily driver Camaro is the sunshine in my day.
Why deprive yourself of one of life's greatest little pleasures?
I don't know ... if I couldn't drive my Camaro EVERYDAY I'd be hating life

hey guys. Sorry i haven't posted, but my vb home didn't tell me there were anymore replies. I'm going to be porting my heads, getting 3.42 gears and a new posi, a 2000rpm stall TC, and new valves, springs, and roller rockers. Sorry i didn't mention it before. Will that be enough for the 262? Also what are the cam's specs and how will my mpg be?

That ought to do it. Get your heads spring seats machined for that extra lift. You ought to get into the low-14s, maybe even high-13s.
Your mileage will suffer a little.

I just put a XE268 into my 305. And no, it doesnt seem too big, as most ppl on here will say .. (Im not sure if anyone else has actually put this cam into a 305, or just jumping on the bandwagon.) The XE268 cam went into a 100,000 mile bottom end. I rebuilt the heads using all comp cams recommended gear, but kept the ports pretty much stock. My car is manual, and has a 9" rear end running about 3.1:1 ratio. On top of the engine is a 600DP holley. My car does not bog, surge or hesitate. And has a rumpy idle at 750rpm. But is nowhere near undrivable or unreliable. I'm happy with the results...
I havent given it a good full throttle run yet, because I only started the car up 2 days ago.. and the cam is still being run in..
But it has great low end throttle response, and you can feel it come alive above 2200rpm..
