383 starter problems.. help!

Well the ONLY thing holding me back now is the starter.. Of course my stock 350 starter will not work because of the 168 tooth flexplate... I went to OReily and bought a starter for a 400 sbc 1980 chevy truck.. It fits, BUT the bolt hole in the block closes to flywheel is a DIFFERENT size than the other 2 starter bolt holes.. It makes NO SENSE.. seems like its the size of a head bolt. Anyone every heard of this?

The 400 starter is HUGE also.. very close to my headers...I'm thinking about taking it back and getting a mini starter.. with 10.25:1 compression, i might need a higher torque starter anyway..

What do yall think ?????????????????????

Sounds like someone stripped out that hole before you and maybe drill and tapped it to 7/16.

i emailed the engine builder and he said use a staggered starter for a 168 tooth sbc..

the one im using wasnt staggered, so maybe thats the problem. I still dont see what the point of having two bolt holes an inch apart is though if only one "works"

Maybe the other was drilled /tapped to something bigger?

be ordering a hi troque mini starter soon

do what i did.....i used a 4.3v6 starter for an 88 s10. its tiny as he!! for great header clearance and has a staggared bolt pattern and works with the 168 tooth flywheel. thank got for Jay at the local NAPA beeing an ex-roundy round racer and telling me about that little gem. :hail: :hail:

already ordered a hi torque mini starter off ebay... $100, but ac delco brand and brand new with a 1 year warranty.

sounds like a good deal you got, but i'd just be worried it wouldnt like my 10.25:1 compression ratio in the log run.

didn't ya read the part about they guy recomending them was a roundy round racer? he was using them to crank over 12.5:1 motors easily. they are some kind of magnetic type starter that makes more torque than a standard gear reduction starter.

Well i tried using the 4.3 liter v6 starter for a 88 S10, it smoked trying to turn the motor over. not near enough power for my 10.25:1 383 stroker.

Cant imagine people using this on a 12:1 compression motor..

It turned it over VERY slow, and stopped ever few seconds. Guess i'll try the hi torque mini starter now..

I didnt have the a/c delco starter, i had a "ultima" reman from hi lo oreily... $100

??

sounds like you got a bad one. mine spins it over a hell of alot faster than my high torque starter turned over my old 355.

I guess so. I put my high torque mini starter i got off ebay on there, and it turns the motor like nothing.

I hope i can take the other starter back since I had to drill out one of the bolt holes to 3"8.

:-(
