Interesting fuel pump problem.....see inside!

Just replaced the fuel pump on my 84 Iron Duke Camaro. Bought this car back in may and it appears every wire, hose, nut & bolt has been messed at one time or another during it's life. Like I said, replaced the fuel pump. Car still would not start. Dropped the tank again to check connections. The new pump was connected the same way as the old. I looked under one the tail lights & found a cut wire that feeds into the fuel pump. Alright.....re-connected the wire. Now I can hear that infamous "hmmm" sound from the new pump. One problem.....it makes that sound after you try to start the car instead of before. In other words....no hmmm sound when the ignition is turned on. Only after I attempt to start her up. Weird!!! Now....how to fix??? What could cause this, another wiring problem? I take it the pump is connected right. The red wire leads to the + post and another faded red (no black wire) wire with a white line feeds the - post. Does this sound correct? Any help would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

Thanks,
Brandon

After searching the board for a while, seems the pump is fine. Most likely the problem is a wire issue. Found a pinkish looking wire connected directly to the battery with some sort of link. Does this power the fuel pump? I disconnected the wire and had no effect on the pump as it acts now.

The link you are refering to might be a fusible link and it might be blown. Take a test light and make sure you have power on the side going to the pump. Hope this helps, John

How do you tell if it's fusable? It's really nothing more than two wires connected with a fancy connector?

The ones I have seen are black or clearish looking and about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch long and about 3 times bigger around than the wire.

This one's black. Opened it up and didn't see anything in there to replace. Tomorrow I'll rip all the fuel pump related wiring to inspect.

Already replaced the relay. Can someone explain to me what a fuseable link looks like and what exactly it is?

Thanks,
Brandon

i belive they are about 3/4" long, black, and aprox. 3 times thicker then the wire.. and they are just an inline fuse (seems like a dumb thing to have to me, a fuse you have to cut out of the line to replace..) i found one on my starter wire and cut it off after the wires shorted and caught fire, guess mine didn't work to well anyway..

I found it! Took it apart and seems fine. How can you tell if it's bad?
