factory roller cams and distributor gears.

I assume by looking at the factory roller cams they are cast and require no different dist gear than the factory flat tappet cams??

Do I assume correctly??

I researched this before and no they dont need a special gear to work with them.

That is correct, just a regular dist gear will work fine.

Uhhh, GM recommends their "melonized" distributor gear when using a factory roller cam. That's not "regular".

I guess that depends on what you call "regular"... it's the stock gear, has been for many years now.

I suspect that the real question is "Do I need a bronze gear to go with my hydraullic roller?" to which the answer would be "No, just use your stock one". It would be easier to be clearer if people would just ask what they really want to know!!

Wish I could visit iroc22's "from" location some time, seems like a very faraway place in my experience... hard to soar with the eagles when you're stuck in a flock of turkeys...

ohhhh.....I didnt phrase the question properly

Or DID I.......

lets review the question.

I was referring to the 1986 and later flat tappet factory cams...that was inferred and should have been understood as such.....as by inference there was no factory roller cams before 1986. I also said the rollers are cast....

SOOOOO....I can see where RB83L69 was confused....after all ..Thanksgiving is just 2 months away.

It's the "regular" gear for factory roller cams. But, distributors such as the GMPP HEI don't have it. So, be careful.

Uh-oh...I'm running a GM replacement HEI external coil distributor with the gear that came on it. How did you get the info on the GMPP dist not coming w/ the melonized gear?

I was talking about the vacuum/mechanical internal coil type HEI.

i bought a 1978 (approx) HEI vacuum advance distrib for my Z28

i added the crane bronze distrib gear, because it says it is required for use with roller cams, which is what i have in my 1987 LG4

If its a stock roller cam then you didnt need the Bronze gear you needed the melonized gear. Bronze gears are made to wear out instead of wearing out the gear on the cam.

Another thing you can do is, the last ledge on the bottom of the distributor, you can take a file and make a few little notches, so the oil can drip directly on the distributor gear. I do this on my dirt track car running a solid lift cam and a stock dist gear. The bronze gears wear out too fast and are too expensive. I have been running it like this since April, every Saturday night, at 6800 rpm's or higher. No problems.
