Cam hitting?WTF?

Ok my car started getting alot of blow-by and making a knocking sound,i removed and tore down the motor,it seems like the camshaft has been sliding forward and hitting the timing chain cover, why the hell is it doing this?the rest of my heads and rotating assembly seem just fine(maybe a little worn.Anyone have any suggestions?

The cam in a flat tappet motor will occasionally hit the TC; usually during really hard braking, or a wreck. It might do it enough over the whole natural life of a motor to leave a few scratches in the TC. This will not cause oil burning. The only way it could cause a knocking noise would be if the cam is driven up against the TC all the time, in which case the TC wouldn't last long before the cam cut a hole through it.

Look elsewhere for the problems. Sounds to me like you have a generally worn-out short block, and maybe other issues too, maybe rolled cam lobes or something like that making the noise..

And if the cam lobes are worn oddly, the thrust may be forward instead of the customary rearward direction. The normal "slope" of the cam lobes that rotates the lifters in their bores also tends to drive the cam rearward slightly. That, coupled with the gear cut of th edistributor/oil pump drive usually holds the cam in place against the case. If you have worn cam lobes and lifters, that thrust may be in the wrong direction. You should easily be able to measure that with calipers or a 2" mic.
