Set aside a day or longer for this. Took me 6 hrs to install headers in my driveway. Longest part is making room to take off the manifolds. I'd pull the car up on ramps first to get the old y pipe off.

You'll have to take the carb and distributor off obviously, but be EXTRA careful not to drop anything down the distributor hole, I'd stick a rag down in the hole when you can.

I'd get some Hooker 2055s, if I were you.

on the topic of headers.. are there any headers that fit onto the stock y-pipe? and how hard is it to change the y-pipe?

No, anytime you get headers you need a new y pipe.

the factory y-pipe is the reason the stock exhaust sucks so much. For those of you who have removed this POS you know what I am talking about. It's not much of a y-pipe at all, more like a T-pipe. Bad. I bought the edelcrock TES exhaust, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd just buy the stainless steel y-pipe from SLP. It bolts to the stock manifolds and catylitic converter, it's alot cheaper, wont rust out, and is an actual smooth flowing y-pipe. I'd even say it will add as much power as the whole edelcrock TES package. Best of all, you dont have to worry about blowing out header gaskets, noise, and hot underhood temperatures. No need to go crazy on exhaust on a mild 5.0L. You can spend your money more wisely elsewhere.

bad_ta_o5, what year car are you putting the headers on? does this car have a/c? cars without the a/c are much easier, what exhaust are you using? I put hedman long-tube with 3in collectors on my 89, they fit great, but when i built my engine i deleted all the computer and other associated BS. i just ran 2.5 exhaust straight out infront of the rear tires here is a pic of the headers when i just dropped the block in.

i have an 85 t/a with a stock 305, the only exhaust mod i have is a warlock muffler, but i plan on changing my y pipe to a better flowing one and im hoping it will help the headers

Wow, wished my engine bay looked that good. It's close, as in free of clutter, but not like that.

So, you didn't use any mufflers? I'm gonna get the Hedman LTs and dual 2.5'' too.
