Gas Fumes

Odd thing when I drive I can smell gas fumes, I see no leaks but I am getting lousy gas mileage. Any Ideas?

To start investigatin, take your car and let it run on at a parking lot or someting, and wait 5 minutes then look for a puddle. If you can't find a puddle underneath, then look under the engine bay

Fuel could be leaking around your Fuel injectors. Its kinda hard to spot.

I had a leak too that took me a week to find, it turned out to be right under the brake booster where the lines run up onto the driversides frame. So I would start the car and look there.

Also look at the heat shield by the tank if it is leaking up top the tank, it will leak down on the heat shield, making it hard to find the exact spot it is leaking from.

My smell was so strong, I thought I would have a fire. But I found the problem to be the hoses on the charchol canister. I cut ends off and put them back on, adding a gas line clip to each. Not a screw on clamp, just a clip. Apparently the pressure in the gas tank was pushing vapor past the leaky hoses. It all went away.

Good that you found it. Since it was an EVAP line, it may take a while to purge teh canister of all liquid, so don't be alarmed if there are intermittent faint fuel odors for a while.

If this is on your "HIS" car (the '86), don't forget that you are one of the lucky ones who still has a filter pad on the underside of the EVAP canister. I think the '87 is still that way, too:
