A couple of annoying problems
84 Z-28
Problem #1:
Interior and gauge lights do NOT work. Fuse is fine, bulbs are fine, what gives? (Yes, I checked to see if the dimmer switch wasn't off)
Problem #2: Fan only blows through defroster......Now I've got some issues here, anybody got a diagram of how the vac lines run for the fan position selector?

is your gauge console loose? there is a white plastic housing that everything is screwed to and if its not pushed all the way into the conectors, it wont get power. if youve ever had it apart youll know what im talking about. just a thought.
#1 That sounds like the switch itself not working. Have you tried jumping 12V directly into the circuit to see if everything illminates?
#2 I think you're on the right track with the vacuum lines. Might want to pull a line off a vac servo and hook up a gauge just to check.

Well, the instrument cluster is in there tight, although my speedometer quick working so I gotta tear in there again anyway, so I'll double check that, but I am 99% sure that's not it.
JZA,
I'm a little slow, where is the servo?

One down, a million little things left.
Turned out that there was a small vac leak on the engine side of the firewall! Fixed it, now for the other simple solutions to potentially complex problems!

Check at the fuse terminals and see if there's dimmer voltage there. The fuse is downstream of the dimmer. If it's there, start looking at the dash; if it's not, you need a headlight switch. Or, in either case, it could be a wiring problem; but that's not too likely unless someone has been in there at some point in the car's life hacking on it.

Thanks RB, I had no idea. Guess I should get off of my butt and read the schematic huh?
All of these problems go back to when I was in the middle of a cam swap and my back went out on me (again).....I was laid up for several months and ended up paying a local shadetree shop to finish it up for me.
They butchered so much stuff. I patched it together, mostly, but now some of those things are starting to bug me so I have to go in there and fix them correctly.
I'd prefer to screw it up on my own, that way at least I've learned a lesson and also know what steps I took so I can trace them!

OK. There are two vac lines that run into the fire wall. The one on the passengers side sounds like it is leaking when I'm outside of hte car. It doesn't sound like inside of the car...........
Where does that hose go?

2 of those small hard plastic vac lines that come through the firewall in a big rubber grommet along with the blower & A/C wiring right below the heater hose nipples?
One of them is the supply to the A/C control head, the other is the vacuum to the heater control valve. Make sure you get the right one connected to the right place.
Notice how those 2 lines are part of the wiring harness.... that whole assembly (wiring and vac lines) was one part, installed into the car as a unit as it rolled down the production line. If it was a non-A/C car it would have had a different part, with different wires and vacuum lines as appropriate, installed as a single unit the same way.

RB,
Thanks. I just wanted to make sure before I tore in there. I never disconnected or connected anything. When I got the car, someone had done a real number on the vac lines. I can pull, gently, on the hose that goes in by the AC and there is a lot of slack, so apparently it came off, or broke the fitting off with it since it won't come out of the wall.
I guess I'll check it out when I change the heater core.
Just wanted a little heads-up before I got in there.
