Check to make sure that during the install process you didnt jar something lose, knock a spark plug wire off, pull a vacuum hose off etc. Go from there.

First thing I'd check would be firing order. I heard plenty of stories about people who accidentaly switched a couple wires while hooking everything back up. - just check to be sure -

messing up the firing order could definately cause a backfire, as you could be sparking while an inlet valve is open, causing a flame front in the plenum, this would be heard as a loud pop.

Another clue of this would be MEGA rough running, as you would only be firing on six.

I'm basing this on my experience of european cars, but i don't see any reason the TPI would work any differently to any other car.

Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, guys!

Im glad that you got all your problems worked out. Im sure it runs a lot better now. With your tbi set up and with carbs, you got to be careful when your car backfires. Generally nothing will be wrong with tbi or carbs, but you always run the risk of ruining it. If your car seems to take a crap in a few weeks, you might want to look at your tbi again.
