valve noise related to air cleaner cover
Ok guy with the same engine as my wagon in my sig. buick 350x 4bb
his will run a tad better if he removes the air cleaner lid but when he really jumps on it hard, it will make some valve train noise. put the air cleaner lid back on and it never makes a peep. but lost a little pep.
there some kind of vacuum, or pvc thing goin on here, how could removing the air cleaner make the vavles tick when jumping on it hard, put the lid on and the valves wont make a peep.
very very stange.

I think it's a safe bet that whatever the noise is, it isn't "valves". I don't know why people say that about that sound or how that got started.
It's probably pinging, from being too lean. The carb is calibrated to give the correct mixture (in the opinion of its designers, anyway) with the air cleaner installed. It isn't meant to be run without an air cleaner, as this would result in very short ring lifetime in some situations, due to dirt getting in there and wearing them out. So it's kind of a moot point.

it still has an air cleaner just so lid. he has two lids. 1 that will just fit over and cover the filter, and the stock cover with not only covers the filter but seals it so it must suck air through the snot in the stock cover.
air cleaner is installed all the time, just one you can see the filter, the other its hidden inside the stock unit.

still what your saying could be true but it allways got the same air cleaner installed, allways being filtered.
just with the big lid on it must suck through the stock snout.
