Work space in heater-ac box

Long story short. Live in Australia. Car converted to right-hand drive. Steering post goes thru heater-ac box facing car on lower right side. Gaping hole around post. I plan to remove evap. to seal off the steering post from the inside. Does that sound like it is possible? I dont know the configuration of the inside of the box and where it vents to the inside. Any detailed drawings or pics of the inside of the heater-ac box? Thanks for any help. It is very hot inside now.
