CAM sizes.........too big too small?

Does anyone know about what size duration on a cam you can have before it starts that famous lope? I know with a TBI you can't have too high of a duration, but I am curious about cam size with a carb.

Look at some of the Crane Compupro cams, they are supposed to be pretty good.

My comp cam xtreme energy 270HR cam .495/.503 lift 218/224 dur. has a decent lope to it. It doesn't sound like anything radical but its a very noticeable rough idle. I don't have headers yet so i don't know how much this accents the lope.

I would suggest reposting this in tbi because people there might now how much intake duration you can get by with a stock chip. For a maf tpi i can get by with this cam but your upgraded L03 is probably already in need of a custom burnt chip.

A good cheap upgrade cam for an L03 might be a 350 tpi cam and 1.6 roller rockers, or a GM Hot cam. Regardless of the your cam choice i would suggest replacing your heads or at least do some basic port work to your heads to get the most out of a cam. Also new valve springs are a must and check your lifters when there out.

Edit: Oh ya whats your block? Roller or flat tappet? and whats the cam thats in it now?

Comp xe268 has a lope in my sbc 355, but the engine doesn't shake, has good brakes. In my Pontiac 400, you can bearly tell it's in there till you drive it.
