IIRC factory setting is 0° with the EST connector disconnected. The car will run much better at 6°.

Are you adjusting the initial timing??? You don't need to worry about bringing anything to TDC. Hook the timing light to the #1 plug (the front right one) and shoot. Just in case you didn't know, clockwise retards and counter clockwise advances (the distributor that is) IIRC.

I'm putting a new distributor in the car.

I need to know if you set the roter on the distributor at #1 compression stroke or #6 compression stroke???

Yes.

Whichever you took the old one out at, put the new one in at the same spot.

Doesn't matter too much. Just as long as the rotor is pointing at number 1 plug on the cap. Go from there. Dist only goes in two directions so putting it back into its original place shouldn't be hard unless you have moved the oil pump shaft in the process of removing the older dist.
