305 burning oil, only after idling for a few minutes, Need Advice

Hey

First off, the problem I am having it on is a 1986 Chevy C-10, 305 V8, TH350. I have posted it on several Chevy truck websites but no one ever responded, so you guys are my only chance.

The problem I am having is that it is burning oil after idling for a few minutes. It was burning oil when it was first started after sitting for awhile and after idling for awhile. So just the other day I replaced the valve stem seals. Now it doesn't burn any oil when it's first started but it still starts smoking after it's been idling for awhile. It doesn't smoke in any other conditions, WOT, etc....So it doesn't sound like the rings, to me any least. And it would seem if I messed up some of the valve stem seals it would still smoke after first starting it. (I did use the sleeves over the stems when I installed the seals)

The head casting is #14022601.

Thanks for any advice

Are you actually loosing oil?
Maybe it's the residual oil in the exhaust system still burning.
My wifes Volvo turbo had a oil leak into the exhaust.
Car continued to smoke a little for a few days after I replaced it, but eventually cleared-up. It was most noticeable at idle after being warmed up. Wasn't noticeable while driving. Probably cause of the increased exhaust diluted the smoke.

i'd leak it down and/or run compression test and see what that tells you.

Before I installed the valve stem seals it was using around 1/2 quart or maybe slighty more. I installed them last Saturday. I have also done a compression check and they were all within 10-15% of each other. I haven't done a leakdown yet.
I just don't see how oil could get into the exhaust manifold unless of course the seals and/or rings were completely gone. I could see how it would leak with a turbo though.

I just don't know, it's weird. I just don't feel like yanking it out yet.

I second the compression test. You can get the tool at Sears for like $30.

Do a leakdown test like ede says and check the plugs after it stalls.

you probably have worn valve guides, it was a problem with the 305's they use a smaller diameter valve stem. What kind of seals did you use? Un less they are perfect circle style seals it will probably still smoke due to the valve guides.

I installed the positive type on the intake and the umbrella type on the exhaust. I also installed the o-rings on both intake and exhaust.

Oh well, leakdown it will be then.

I guess I will put up with it until I get tired of it or it starts using more oil than gas. Time to drop in a Big Block

jsusoutherners,
I don't know about how much it will cost for a shop to do it. But I bought both the intake and exhaust valve stem seal kits for around $25.00. Other than that all you need is a valve spring compressor, a good air compressor, valve cover gaskets, and a Whole Lot a Patience.

Thanks for the advice guys,
