torque converters
what exactly do torque coverters do? i know you need a higher stall speed with bigger cams, but what exactly is stall speed and what does it do? what would happen if i put a 5000 stall behind a stock engine or a huge cam in with a stock stall?

when i think of stall, i am thinking about when i have the brakes on and giving it gas you can see the engine rpm and it stops at a certain place, like at a track..
once you do mods to your engine, then you usually get a converter with a certain stall to match where your engine performs the best..

i think i get it. so if i got a 2500 stall it would engage at 2500rpms and stock would engage a lot sooner. if i was to put my foot on the brake with it in gear and give it gas it would only rev to about 1000 with a stock converter and it would rev to 2500 with a 2500 stall. am i right?
right now the idle is set at 750 in park and in gear it goes to about 650-600. with a higher stall would it not go down as much?

Well it would depend on the quality of the converter.........You cant determine true stall by powerbraking. The brakes wont hold. With a good stall, you should see little difference when driven nicely....now jump on the gas and the stall will "flash" engaging at 2500 or more rpm's. The right converter matched with your set-up...will actually make a HP motor more streetable....BUT! you wont get this from a $200 converter. Spare no $$$ on this very noticeable mod. Do a search on this board and see what I mean.

Try www.ptcrace.com
They have quality converters, and stand behind there work. Plus they wont drain your wallet. A bunch of the guys at the local track run them. We are talking cars with 600-1000 hp.
I plan on getting one as soon as I redo my motor.
