A few cam q's

Ok I know basically nothing about cams, and I'm trying to learn, so I need to know where I can find some literature (online) that will explain to me the effects of changing lope serperation, lift, duration, etc.

Also, (this is a more specific question), how does a bigger cam affect idle? I mean, guys always say "a cam that big is going to hurt your idle" - what does that mean? It tries to die or what? I don't see how an engine that tries to die is good but bigger cams are supposed to provide bigger power, correct?

Thats the kinda stuff I want to learn, so I figure if I can find somewhere to learn about the fundamentals, I can apply them to these kind of situations. Where should I go? Thanks!
