Shipping out a motor
Not sure where to put this one so here goes. I'm shipping someone a block. It's too heavy for UPS or USPS. How the hell do I ship this thing. Has anyone here ever done it? I'm in CT so if you can recommend someone around here too that would be great.

I'm currently doing the same sort of thing, a guy in Michigan is supposed to buy my race preped 700r4-we'll see-you'll have to call trucking/freight companies-call as many as poosible as prices vary greatly. They'll ask you the weight of the shipped item, keep in mind that you will have to crate this item (see photo) so the company can move stuff around w/ a pallet jack or fork truck. What class the item is, the tranny complete was a class 85 don't know what a block would be. Are you going to drop it off at the companies terminal or are they picking it up from your house, same as the guy on the other end, all my companies residential fees were around $50-55 per residential visit. I'm dropping it off at the terminal as they're only 20min away and the company has another terminal 30min from this guys house so he saved $110 right there on a 225lbs package. Prices were from $91.43 to $172.48 +3.5% for fuel, and it's only going from central IA. to Detroit. They'll give you a quote number, keep it, so when you ship it they'll have all your info on file already.
Is it a bare block? Just the case alone may be under the wieght limit for FedEx, since they have a higher weight/girth allowance than those wimps at UPS. Roadway/RPS will also do regular motor freight with residential pickup/dropiff. I'm sure there are many others. One I would avoid is Holland Freight - they don't seem to be very customer oriented and seem rather slow.

I use FedEx Freight for overweight packages/pallets.

I'm in the process of sending a complete 350 TPI engine from Illinois to Washington DC. It is gonna cost $305.00
to ship it by truck (Conway freight).
I secured it to a pallet & boxed it in "what a time consuming & royal pain in the rear !!" , now I'm ready to deliver it to the trucking dock wher they will unload it from my truck with their fork lift & then deliver it to the buyers address.
The others are right, Look in the yellow pages and call the various trucking freight lines in your area. Ask them what they require as far as boxing, pick-up & delivery and shipping charges.

Try Fed-X ground shipping services. I sent a pair of cast iron heads through them (102 lbs) and it was only $47. The person at the ground ship counter told me there was no real weight limit on ground shipping, however you may need to ship to a commercial address or have them pick it up at the freight terminal.
ABS (i think) has the best rates for motor freight. they give special rates for infrequent shippers that use their web page and drop off and pick up at a terminal. i have the link saved on my puter at home but not here
A little bit off the subject but does anyone know how much a fully dressed (all accessories) L98 weighs? Also a T-5 tranny?? I am going to list these two for sale but need wieghts for shipping quotes.
