Stumped!

Well, this post goes hand in hand kinda with my other post about my vaccum leak. After I reinstalled my distrib, the vaccum leak started and so did this quirky little starting problem. When I crank the engine with my foot off of the gas, if will turn over for about 2 turns, then the stall for half a second, turn again for about 1 turn, stall once more, then the engine fires right after that. BUT, the funny thing is, if I hold the accelerator to the floor, the damn things doesn't stall, 2 cranks and she fires right up! This has me confused and , haven't encountered anything like this at all. Right now, I haven't even a GUESS of what is causing this. Any suggestions would be helpfull.

are you positive you hooked the plug wires back to the distributor in the right order?

Positive. I didn't even take the wires off of the cap, just the cap off of the base, and the base out of the block. 'Tink I woulda noticed a screwed up firing order!:sillylol:

Sounds more like a carb getting fuel problem to me. The first couple times is just getting it primed. Try pumping it some, then crank it over. I know when the weather got cold, I have to pump the h*ll outta my edelbrock 750. Here is mine when it is cold , pump about 50 times then crank it fires then quites. Pump about 30 times then crank, it runs for about 3 seconds, then last pump about 20 times and give it about 1/4 throttle and it fires up. But once the car warms up, it runs like you wouldn't believe.

50,30,20 pumps?:sillylol: I figure youd be outa gas by then!! I thought that also, but that all it takes to get started is 2 pumps. Even then, lack of fuel would make then engine turn over and over until there was enough present for it to start, and thats just my problem, it doesn't want to turn over consistenly. Maybe I should check my starter lead again, it IS close to my headers....

If you are referring to starting the engine 1st thing in the morning or first time of the day, or after the car has been sitting for awhile.

You will need to tap the gas pedal to set the choke.....

this could be why it starts when you push the gas pedal.

I am talking about after mine has set for like 24 hours. I can run it to work at 5 in the mornig, then when I come back out that evening it will fire right up. It is just after sitting for a while. Especially like after a weekend of lettin it sit around and driving the truck.

No, I'm not talking only about when I first start it up, it does it even when warm. At first I thought it was heat soak, but it did it when it was cold.

385LT1: What kind of carb do you have to automaticly set the choke by tapping the pedal?

If I advance my timing to far it will do something similar. Turn over then act like the battery is dying, then turn over and start. Since you had the distributor out you might check the timing. Just a thought.

A buddy has a Edelbrock 750 with an electric choke....

He tapps the gas once to set the choke.... turns the key and it fires right up into high idle... after sufficient heat in the engine has been built up.... it will kick down...... as they call it....

if it worked good before you changed the distributer, i would say your timing is too advanced

You know, I hadn't thought of this, but you have a mechanical and a vaccum advance on there dont you. Have you checked to make sure your weights have not gotten gummed up so they don't advance or you have you checked to make sure you havn't knocked your vaccum line off of the distributer or carb.

on the q-jet (pootah controlled) on my Camaro, i pump 4 times cold and 2 if its been stood for a few hours. hot i just turn the key.

Using this method, it starts first time, and fast idles when cold, right into proper idle warm etc, never any performance or running issues.

On my old Cutlass supreme with 600 holley, 2 pumps and no choke always cold started it.

For the camaro, try 4 or 5 pumps then try starting. i'll wager it fires right up. my car has always been like this, and has no type of fuel leakage.

has yours always been like this?
