Car making weird noise

My car has been making a really weird noise lately. Its making this whining or moaning sound. It sounds kind of like the hatch motor, but i'm sure its not that. It sounds like its coming from under the car about midway back. When you're in the car it sounds like its coming from behind you. It starts when i brake or turn kind of hard. It'll do that for a while, eventually it gets to where it does it constantly. It also makes the noise in every gear, even park and neutral. I'm new to cars so i don't really know where to start. Its not the brakes, i've already checked those and they look fine. Plus it mkes the noise even when i'm not moving. I'm thinking it must be something before the clutch, because it makes the noise when I'm in park, and there shouldn't be anything moving behind the clutch, right? Well anyways, thats the best I can explain, any more help is appreciated. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Anth

only thing I can think of that might sound like that is the fuel pump. Maybe it is on it's last leg.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of that. I'll have to look into it.

OK, i'm pretty sure now that it is my fuel pump. I figured out that it makes the noise really bad when I'm low on gas, and that it stops when I fill up. My question is about how much money an i looking at to get it replaced? I won't be able to do it myself because I don't have the right equipment, and no time with school and work. So how much am I looking at with parts and labor? I need to start saving up incase it goes out on me. Thanks for your help.

Anth,

The noise isn't necessarily the "voice of doom" for your pump. I had a Fiero that had a noisy pump for at least three years, and I drove that car everywhere just waiting for it to fail. It never did. I finally replaced the pump after the tank pickup assembly was damaged in an accident. The removed pump was still working fine, just noisy.

If you are still developing adequate fuel pressure, it might not be as serious a problem as you think. On the other hand, it could fail tomorrow - but so could a quiet pump.

Don't really know what the price would be for your area, but I don't think you need all that many tools. All you have to do is lower the gas tank, and I know there are some tech articles about how to do it if you do a search on the tech boards. I would say you will pay at least 100-150 in labor plus the pump, but that is just a guess. Even if you did need some tools, you can buy alot of tools for the labor they will charge you ,then you get to keep them. Unless you just don't have the time. And it is cold as sh*t outside if you don't have a garage.

Yes, autos have clutch packs, but not A clutch. There is a difference.

Yes there is a difference, but I find it hard to believe he thinks his auto has a clutch. I am sure he meant the clutch in his transmission. If he didn't then he shouldn't be driving.

I know that automatics don't have a "clutch". I was just referring to the part that separates the moving parts of the engine from the rest of the drivetrain when you're in park or neutral.

And I found out for sure that it is my fuel pump making the noise. I know that doesn't necesarilly mean that it's going to fail, but i want to be prepared just in case. Plus that noise is freaking annoying!!! And I really just don't have the time. My car would be in garage for a long time if i had to do it.

Well, technically there is a clutch (in a conventional sense) in the torque converter. Most of them are a 9" or 10" wet disc. But I know what you're saying.

fuel pump

A nosy fuel pump is ok and i would have it replaced unless you have to..(pain in the *** job and/or pricy. but the risk is that you stall somewhere bad. But i know for a fact that you will be charged around 300 to 400 dollars for everthing! i know this cuz I had it done after my fuel pump died for a 3rd time!! ouch.. so i replaced it myself twice and had someone else do it the third time cuz i was sick of doing it myself. others should agree. but i wouldnt replace it unless you have to cuz mine is kinda noisy just upgrade to a louder exust!! lol

Love my car 88 trans am 305 TBI

Get a louder exhaust!! That's funny. My exhaust is so loud I couldn't tell you if my fuel pump is loud or not. I can barely tell whether I got my radio on or not.LOL!!!! It would just be a pain in the *** to have your fuel pump go out somewhere that you didn't have a choice on where to get it fixed and didn't have the option to do it yourself. (like on a trip or somethin) And it always seems to go when you get short on cash, not when you have plenty in your pocket. But hey, Like Clint Eastwood said "Well, Do you feel LUCKY!!!
