A/C removal

If I were to choose to remove the air conditioning unit permanently, would I need to replace it with a free spinning pulley to keep the tension on the belt, or would simply putting on a shorter belt be required?

A/C IS a free-spinning pulley UNTIL the compressor clutch engages..until then, it's free. You COULD just get a shorter belt, but if you're running a serpentine system, routing might be tricky since the belt has to run specific sides on specific pulleys. All pulleys EXCEPT belt tensioner and water pump ride on grooved side.
