What exactly does the crank do?

I was watching a show the other day and they were talking about a 350 bored .030 over with a 400 crank. What would be the advantage of a 400 crank?

TIA,

Kurt

A larger crank shaft will provide the piston with more travel. When it comes to power output the 400 crank will provide more torque down low than a 350 crank.

Its not quite as simple as swapping in a 400 crank, but it boils down to more torque than the stock 350.

longer stroke makes more cubes more int. leverage = more hp and alot more torque. result

Only problem with longer stroke is..of course, the crank is bigger...which means more rotational mass....harder to spin. Which means lower maximum rpms and it takes the engine longer to reach revs...which is why you can't add insane amounts of stroke...after a certain point, you lose acceleration. Wonder why **** rockets rev so high? 8 grand, 9 grand, up? No stroke or light cranks! From what I've heard..generally, stroke = torque. Bore = horsepower.

So would a 350 .030 over with a 400 crank be better suited for a 3rd gen, or for a suburban that's a daily driver and used for towing a 25 foot boat in the summer?

I think most imports are in the 2.75-3.25 in stroke range while some (mainly the domestic sport compacts) are doing the 3.25-3.75 range

I think

don't quote me on that though

What they built is a 383 stoker motor. They have awesome torque. You can build them just like any other engine.Make them how you want.Depends on the cam, heads, etc etc.I mean you can either make one a 1/4 mile monster that pulls the front tires.Or build one that is streetable just depends. They are very popular and you can find the right parts to build one at just about any highperformance automotive warehouse.Like summit, paw, jegs, etc etc. They are pretty affordable to build to.

This is probably a really stupid question, but can you add a 400 crank to a 305?

400 crank in 305

Yes you can stroke a 305 but it is essential point less since you already have plenty of torque and you can increase the cubes I think the most you can stroke a 305 is around 337 cui.
