Why do you say that? I'm confused.

It's a RWD car with a 325 HP V8...... and that's a bad thing? What does the EPA have to do with it?

wow, that looks promising. Chevy cars of late have been rather sorry pieces of work. I always love it when an older caprice or impala comes in to work, of course the people who drive them have no idea how nice of cars they are.

A 96 impala ss came in a while ago, bunch of bumper stickers on it, both bumpers cracked, paint oxidizing, only 50k miles on it, oil looked like it had never been changed. Well you get my point, i got a few days work out of it though...

Anyway, a nice big rear wheel drive sedan is just what chevy needs!

well...i think it's much more a of a marketing decision not to have it in the us. I mean if someone here wants a big sporty sedan they just buy a lexus right? It just may not fit chevy's image anymore, which is sad beyond belief.

The fact of the matter here is that 90% of automobile consumers wouldnt know a "good" car if their life depended on it. I mean, just look at what everyone drives, and how they treat it.

Gm is much more interested in pushing their SSr thing-a-ma-jig.

WELL! You must've missed it! Because, on the GMArabia site, there was a press release saying "Damn the EPA!" Hmmm, how'd that one get past the web editors?!?

Of course, the EPA wasn't mentioned. BUT, that doesn't change the fact that; "It's not sold in North America."

No hard feelings, just don't be a dick about what other people say.

I personally like the Lumina SS more. Not a huge fan of the front end but the rest of the car is top notch. The interior is nice and having the same LS1 as the Caprice SS while being lighter must account for some added performance. Not to mention it's probably cheaper. Problem is power to weight ratio and insurance. Sell that over here in the US and insurance will cost MORE than what your payments would be for it .
Hey OldsmobileGuy, wake up, it's in just about every post. Arabia

sorry for obscure EPA reference. IMHO it's not sold here due to the popularity of trucks/SUVs, how that relates to the EPA's fleet mileage requirements, and probably a perceived lack of demand.

Damn the EPA?

That's rather odd. The window sticker in my '96 listed the EPA estimated mileage at 17/27. the little POS Mazda 6 V-6 "sport sedan" only gets an EPA estimated 27 highway mileage, and I can fit one of those in my trunk. Where's the "high tech" at now?

No bumper stickers here:

BTW - Can you tell which one makes 35 RWHP more than the newer Caprice SS just by looking? (And that's through cast iron exhaust manifolds.)

i'm jealous. what do you pay for insurance on those beauties? i've been toying with the idea of converting a Caprice into an SS. i'd buy the real thing, but need a daily driver for 100+ mi/day.

Why are you calling me a dick? All I did was ask a question?? You need to watch your mouth and quit making assumtions. :nono: It was just a question.

And I'm glad you don't have any hard feelings. I'll sleep better tonight.

Anyway..... back to the topic.

The market is the reason they stopped production of the Caprice. They were selling the heck out of trucks, and not many Caprices. Since the Caprice assembly plant had all the equipment to handle full frame trucks, they kicked the Caprices to the curb.

Hey dude, it is cause of the EPA, i live in the middle east, and am still considering a Lumina SS, but if i get one i cant get it shipped back to the states, because it lacks EPA approval, just to get the thing inspected (by the EPA for import reasons) costs 3g's. no way in hell is it worth it. pulling the entire LS1 drivetrain and dropping it into the camaro however, im thinkin about that.

C'mon, guys. A little consideration might be a good thing. Remember that whatever you type doesn't have the inflection that you may have intended to convey, so choose your words a little more carefully please.

I'd normally do this through PM or email, but you started it in the open, so I'll end it here. Don't make me use The Force. It's no fun having to suspend members that actually have something good to offer the site.

In other words, NTChrist, be a little more careful about what you write. And AJ_92, I can understand your taking offense to name-calling, but I doubt that he meant it as more than a little fun.

In case I'm wrong, everyone has been cautioned...

The poster made it sound like Chevy/GM won't make it here because the EPA won't let them. I think it's because Chevy/GM doesn't want to make it here. As most of the articles on the website state, the Caprices sold better to the Camel Cruisers than to Americans.

I feel your pain to. It would be nice if our government wasn't full of tree huggers.

OH.....OK Yo comprendo señor.

You're damning the EPA for allowing our gas guzzlin' SUVs to make way by not having to meet certain criteria!!!!!

You are absolutely correct. As I said before, ".....if our government wasn't full of tree huggers." Sickening isn't it?

See... I'm not as think as you dumb I am.

The word from one of the GM executives was why give "us" a V8 car when "we're" content in buying the six cylinder sedans.

Uhh,,, cause we can't get a V8? And are we???? Actually he may be right. Most people I know don't care about the power like most of us on the board. I still don't understand GM abandoning the city and state governments (police). Most seem to still be buying the Crown Vic.

Anyway, the new GTO (LS1 RWD 6-speed) is slated for release late this year. If it sells, then we might see the return of the V8 in a few cars. I think they're doing R&D for an LS1 FWD in the current Impalas, maybe there is hope for "us" yet.

I saw that too and thought the same thing, but I dont think that the torque is rated in ft lbs. Its rated in Nm.

Yes, the original 427 Ford was a very good engine. Too bad for them it was only produced for four years and died in '67.

There's still the Ramjet 502 for anyone that wants real V-8 thunder. Or the 535 marine/industrial engine, in pure silicon aluminum, no less.
