350 or not to 350
I have a 305 TPI engine was was thinking of moving up to the 350 would it be worth the time? will the 305 give enough streetable power? how much compared to the 350 looking for appox 350 ponies and a whole lot of tork : ) I have both blocks the 305 is ready and running the 350 needs to be built
RECEMENDATION PLEASE
RECEMENDATION PLEASE
I'll preface this by stating that this is simply my OPINION. It seems that is what you are asking for, and is about 99% of what you will get from this site anyway.
If I had a running 305 in a vehicle that needed some work (either necessary or elective) and a separate 350 sitting around the house, I would keep the 305 running in the vehicle while building the 350 to my specifications. Parts, labor, and time invested in the project would be able to be dedicated at whatever rate you decide, since you wouldn't be pressed to get a vehicle back in service.
Money and time spent on the 350 would likely yield greater results than an equal investment in the 305. The potential for build variations and power is far greater for the larger bore engine. Fuel economy is insignificant at anything but idle and low RPM operation, and even at that would be minimal. Parts and supples for the 350 can actually be had for less money than some of the 305 counterparts, in areas such as pistons, ring sets, heads, valves, camshafts, etc.
When completed, the only significant step required to make the exchange would be to increase the fuel delivery to the 350. Larger injectors, a 350 EPROM, and possibly an AFPR to compliment your modifications would at the least get you running fairly well. Eventually, you may want to use a custom EPROM, but that would be the case with either engine build, and possibly more so with the 305.
You could retain the TPI setup from the 305 (since they are the same for both engines), as well as the entire ECM/control system, transmission, accessories, etc. If you wanted to embarass some of your acquaintences, we wouldn't even tell them you've built a 350. You can just go on telling them the car has a 305 (and forget to mention that it is sitting in the garage - not the engine bay).

Opinions-R-Us...
Will the 305 give enough streetable power? Sure. Just ask your insurance company.
First time I gave my 5.0-driving buddy a ride in my car after the mods, he thought the needle that he could see out of the corner of his eye winding up was the tach. It was actually the speedometer (can't see the tach from the passenger seat).
If I had a 350 shortblock, would I use it? Absolutely. Doesn't mean the 305 doesn't have power, it's just that power is like money:
How much is enough?
"Just a little bit more".

For a little more work and money, you could stroke the 350.
You would see a serious increase in torque over the 305.
Aftermarket manifold and runners would be necessary though if you stay with a LTR TPI sys.

Well worth the time.....
What year is the car ? 5 speed or auto ?
305 to 350 TPI. I've done a couple of them and with some fairly inexpensive mods they really fly. I read all the need a knock sensor, injectors ect.... Posts and I was concerned at first but later to find out that it wasn't true, atleast for a 90 and above car that delivers under 355 horepower but delivers close to 400 or better ftls of torque.
. I see more over cam'd underflowing cars for TPI in here than any other problem. Worth the time.. Unreal diffrence and my car was fast for a 305 before....
It's all about air/fuel flow management in my eyes. Massive quanities moving quickly through the engine. Done before 5,000 rpm's....

The vehilce that I am working on is a 1979 elkie non computer the trans is a 700R4 I am going to wire it up with painless. The donor car was a 85 elcamino with the 305 tpi but the hunderhood harness was perrty mind boggoling had wires going every which way a made no sense. the engine might have a cam in it allready, headers as well. I'm not forsure that the engine cam from the camaro what info I can find on the engine is the following
LB9 190 hp from z28/ T/A / B / Monte 80-85
The info I have on from the engine is
GM50 LG /14010201 back of block
V0617CFA / 1F 492418 front of block
is is correct?
Also if i was to use the under hood harness can you help me some how to wire it up to my car I also have the computer that the engine used

One thing you can do that will work perfectly with both the 305 and 350 is install a set of headers and a 3" exhaust system. You WILL notice a difference when you've done that

Well.... that's not intirely true. What you hear about the injectors or knock sensor or anything else need be changed isn't true. I am running everything that my car came with in 90.. well kinda...
The first time around on my car I didn't want to mess with having a car that wasn't smog legal for fear that I'd get hit test only. Regular testing I am not worried about. I had a late model 350 block.. Built the lower end, had my heads done, did some mild porting, installed the ramjet cam and with everything else exactly the way it was from the factory, it was about the same as the stock 305 was new, except it had a vibration... So I looked around for some heads. My bosses kid had 16 sets, he's now has 22 sets of cast iron heads. He traded me my 993 big valve heads for my 081's straight across... I got some diffrent pistons, modified my fuel pressure regulator, Set to 45 at idle 50 on acell, got some headers, new carsound 3' cat with a flowmaster cat back, ported the manifold, runners, plentum, heads and purchased a 52mm throttle body. Now it's got some serious *****. All sensors and injectors are the same OE sensors and most everything is been on there since day one.
