Head casting #'s help please
Head casting #'s help please
Ok here is my problem a friend of mine gave me a set of heads that came with a 350 crate engine he bought from advance auto parts(told them he wanted an engine for an 89 TPI 350).
when he got the engine he removed the heads and cam cause he is doing the vortec head and hotcam buildup.
now i have the heads and want to port them to put on my 89 TPI 350 when i change my cam in a few months(tight budget)
the casting # on the heads is 14101081 .I looked them up at mortec and they come up as 305 heads is this correct and if so why were they on a replacement 350?
anyone please?

Yes those are 305 heads. They put them on the 350 because thats what they had, and would be the cheapest. There rebuilt engines are not the best because they do them as cheap as possible, only replacing whats necessary and doing the work sloppy. The use the good enough principle, if its close its good enough!

I don't know what is your car? What are the casting numbers?
Ported up 305 heads on a 350, makes a torque monster.

I have an 89 formula 350TPI with an automatic trans and 9 bolt 3:23's
the heads on the car now are original(leaking valve seals ) and the reason i was going to use the heads given to me was that i could have them all ported and ready to go when i do the cam swap.
im not looking at any radical cams something around .480 to .490 lift
with good daily driver manners that can run when i want it to.
I figured i could change the springs for the lift without machine work. but i guess i would need the heads machined for larger valves to use on my 350?
what do you think?

I would keep the 350 heads that you have, and port them up. You could rebuild them and install 2.02, 1.60 valves and better springs. Should be a decent setup.

Ya your original 350 heads are better then the 081 heads that he gave you, but if you know someone how needs some good 305 heads, say someone with an L03 I would sell them to that poor bugger.
Be a good upgrade for him anyways.

Yes ... let one of us poor 305 LO3 guys take advantage of the heads. They are decent on an LO3, with a port and polish job.
I don't need 'em - I have a set of #416's I'm porting - but I'm sure another 305 LO3 user would appreciate the opportunity.

There aren't any miles on them. they were removed from the engine when he bought it .(this is a rebuilt engine from advance auto parts ).They are complete with springs ,stamped rockers and valves all assembled.
He gave the heads to me so i will just give them back ,but i know he doesnt need them so i can check with him if anyone wants them.

The difference between those "081" 305 tpi heads and
your 350TPI heads "083" if that is in fact what is one your motor now, is the 081 heads have smaller 1.84" x1.50" valves and smaller 58cc chambers.
the 083 350 TPI heads have 1.94x 1.50 valves and 64cc chambers. The ports are the same.
You could home port the 305 heads and have 1.94 valves installed. This will make a great budget replacement for your
now worn out 350 heads.
You'll have more flow and a bit more compression.
Measure the valve size on the 081 heads, they may already have the bigger valves installed.

The sad part is i am a machinist its just that i have never done automotive machine work.
my first question is how much would it up my com. ratio?
second is do you have any idea what it would cost for the upgrad on the valves and spring seats.I will check it out next week but was just wondering?
Thanks
