having some trouble with the new engine pleasehelp me

allright i got my car pretty much in tune carb wide but it is still poping through the intake.

heres whats happening

1. at idle the engine will have a small pop every 7-10 seconds.
2. running down the road at idle it runs allright a little shaky but you can't really notice it.
3. when you step on the gas around half way the car will accelerate beautifully.
4. if you accelerate over 3000 the car will surge and pop and then go.
5. if you full throttle it it will pop and the car will then accelerate but there is a lack of power.

i took it took a a service shop to run a diagnostic they said that they needed to check the valves for adjustments and also check the distributor curve. all the work was quoted at $313.42. does this sound right. my mechanic is out of town and he told me to set the carb(which is what we originally thought was wrong with it and if it wasn't that he would figure it out.) regardless i am taking my car to the chevy dealership because they did all the work and i trust them with mycar.

thank you all

could be valves not adjusted properly leaving a valve hanging open. or coil is on the way out. if holley, then may need to change out the power valve to the correct one.

Make sure the ignition system is in good condition, since spark to an adjacent cylinder can create similar symptoms.

Check for plug wires crossed cylinder's 5 and 7 .. They follow each other in the firing order and I have seen this before. If ok besure the timing is right... Then check vacume... If your vacume is low and fluctuates then better check valve adjustment. check crossed wires first though

I had this problem too it was abad alternator. My new battery kept dieing but my alternator was still putting out 13.5 volts but the stator went in it. Rebuilt the alternator with the iceburg upgrade 39.99 plus the stator 35.00 and all my popping, crappy ideling went away. popping through the intake is almost always electrical other than valve lash. But the vac guage will tell you if it is valve adjustment with its flucuation.

Good Luck
