fuel in oil????

i was thinking....

last time i changed oil (recently) i got some oil (i watched it come right out of teh pan, so i know it came from there) on my sweatshirt. anyways, after that, i noticed (actually my mom helped me notice, haha) that it SMELLED like GAS!

so im just wondering what would cause gas in the oil??

sorry, fuel injected. 91 3.1.

idle searches a little...not quite what i would call steady or smooth, but i dont think there are any obvious running problems. i think a fresh timing set would do wonders.

I dont know much about FI but I think I would check for a leaking fuel injector or the intake for leaks with the surging both the intake with a vacuum and a fuel leak would cause this I had a vac leak on my intake and had gotten some fuel in the oil change the intake gaskets and sealed the bolts with teflon. No vacuum leak or fuel leak I guess you could rule out the pump since yours is remote (not in the block). Note that some vacuum leaks and fuel leaks on the intake may not be visibly found. I found mine when I put a vaccum guage on the vacuum port of the intake. Mine is a v8 but the same principle applies. Di you get any codes?

Regardless of the source, gas in the oil is bad for multiple reasons. One, the gas can wash the oil from your bearings and other internal parts that rely on an oil film to survive. Second, the gas in the crankcase CAN ignite - this happened on my old truck a couple of years ago, and it blew the valve covers up off the heads. The valve covers were lifted up over the retainers about 1.5" off the head. The retainers were bent into V-shapes and had to be hammered flat. I could see the rockers with the valve covers still on!
