Can anyone decode this engine # for me?
Its from the front of the engine in my 87 TA...K0824FJC. The car was originally a 305, but one of the former owners claimed a 350 was swapped in. It runs like a 305, but I'd like to know for sure, and my #s book only covers casting #s and I can't see the casting # with the engine in the car.

Don't bother with that one... get the casting #. It can be seen, with a minor amount of effort; it's behond the driver's side head, on teh top of the bell housing flange. It's the one that will tell you with absolute certainty what the motor really is; or at least, what the bore diameter is. Since that's the one thing that sets a 305 and a 350 apart, it's all you need to know.

Thats what I figured...theres a lot of built up gunk in that area, plus a wiring harness, but I'll get it all out of the way tonight. True, 305 vs 350 is all I really need to know...if its a 305, I won't bother doing much to it. The engine code hasn't shown up anywhere I've looked so far.

Sometimes (depending on gunk) you can crawl under the car and look at the 3 numbers (digits) on the side of the block.
When I bought my truck, that's what I did. Although it's a lot easier to see under a truck than a pass car.
Then go to the good ol' www.mortec.com and match them with the last 3 of the casting numbers listed.
F.I., the numbers on my truck motor are 203.

Cool, I didn't know part of the casting # was there too. I have noticed some late model blocks have the displacement on the side or even the bellhousing flange, but for some reason LT1s say "327"...havent figured that one out yet.
