My car won't start (again). It was running fine, and I drove to pick up some food and then it wouldn't start again. It cranks, but won't start so now it's sitting in a chinese restuaraunts parking lot. It's TBI. I was looking at it this morning and the injectors aren't spraying and fuel. I has plenty of gas in it. WHat could it be??? I'm thinking it's the fuel pump, it has a new filter, could it be anything else???? Thanks

 

Do you have adequate fuel pressure? Is the pump priming? The computer won't fire the injectors unless it recieves reference pulses from the distributor, so that's another possiblity.

Sounds like the fuel pump is dead.

 

I second the fuel pump issue.

 

pump should come on and prime for 4-7 seconds and hold 40 lbs pressure. once pumped, you should be able to turn it off, and still hold that pressure. If not the regulator may be bad. You can pull the vacuum hose to the regulator and look for gas in there too.

also the pump needs to pump a volume of fuel...2-3 pints in 20 seconds I think. you should be able to break the lines under the hood.

is it hard to start cold, or just hot?

if you are getting fuel pressure and no injector firing, then check the module underneath the distributor cap. Most auto parts stores can test them.

 

Out of curiosity, what state are you in, how much gas in the tank, and how cold was it?

 

Before you change your fuel pump, check the fuel pump relay. If you have a service manual, it should tell you how to test it. *By jumping the fuse box.*

 

You mean for him to put 12V to the 'G' terminal of the ALDL from the fuse box right?

The way I do it on VW's is by hooking the powerlead of that relay to the ground within that relay's position. I am not 100% sure if GM did it the same way. I dont have my manual with me to really check, or I would give you a definate answer.

 

Oh, I see, you want him to test the actual relay. I posted how to test the pump (to make sure that was good to go). My bad.

 

Its kinda a double test. If the pump doesn't turn on, and it does with the jumper on, change the relay and see if that helps.

If it doesn't turn on either times, check the power and ground leads with a test light to the box and go from there.

If it does turn on both times, relay is good, check fuel pressure.
