400 heads on a 350

Hey guys. Would there be any reason why I shouldnt use 400 heads with the steam holes on the 350 block? Will it mess ut the gasket in the long run?

Thanks,

Peter

No it will not bother the gasket at all. They are the same crappy castings as the crappy 70s 350 heads (882 or 624 usually). Don't expect too much out of a motor with either of those 2 castings on it.

Crappy castings

Thanks for your quick reply. The casting i got is actually 642 but still are labeled as smog heads wherever I look. I needed something temporary so I could finally start driving my new 383 tho. Hopefully Ill be able to slap on some nice AFR 195's before racing season. Thanks again,

Peter

305 on 350

I was wondering about the pro's & con's of putting 305 heads on my 78 350 and if that is not a good Idea, what should I be looking for. Also any ideas on a affordable combo build would be cool. great forum thanks

I don't recommend the 882 casting heads... I have them, and they suck really bad. To give you an idea of how small the ports are, my friends ford 351 heads have bigger ports than mine. Also, 400 heads are most likely going to have very large chambers (mine have 76cc chambers) which is gonna give you low compression. In short, yes, they will bolt up and work fine, but they are not going to perform very well.

if the engine is built right it should do quite well....

Rock 'n Roll Engineering managed 539hp on 87 octane with a Pontiac 350....according to the Car Craft article on the engine, they used Edelbrock aluminum heads for a Pontiac 400 IIRC

Totally different beasts. You could get a Poncho 400 with WAY better heads, and even very workable smogger heads.

Yeah I have the 882 castings also, and they do suck. But they will work if you are just wanting to slap them on and cruise around till you get some new heads. I wouldnt recommend spending any money on them, but what do I know. Someone else has probably gotten them to perform well.

Any of you know what heads my '79 Camaro Z28 engine came with? Its a 350 (L48) that was rebuilt, but still has the factory heads.

My 79 Z28 had 882s, as did my 78. I'd guess that's what they are which is why it's so gutless.

Pop a valve cover off, the casting number should be above the #2 or #7 cylinders. Give us the casting # and someone can decifer it. The last 3 digits are all you need.
