Getting the steering wheel off is about the only problem. Disable the airbag first. (Very important)

So i have to take the steering wheel off??

The ignition switch is on the back of the steering column, does it have to do with the rods??

I have the steering column dropped and can reach it, it looks like the steering wheel won't block me from dong anything...

You shouldn't have to remove teh wheel unless you have a problem with the linkages or lock cylinder. Just remove the two screws holding the switch. Be very careful not to move/drop the linkage rod. You may want to wrap a piece of masking tape around the linkage rod and outer jacket of the column to hold the rod in place while the switch is off, just to be safe. It may be possible to swivel the rod just wrong and have it fall out of the linkage at the tilt mechanism, which turns the switch replacement into a major project.

Are you trying to replace the ignition switch or the lock and tumbler?

after you have dropped the column, go ahead and take off the brace that is on the bottom of the column. gives you more space. dont take your keys out of the ignition while you are doing it, since that will change the position of the part that the rod goes into on the switch. to get the back rod out, slip a flathead into the LITTLE hole on the back where that rod goes in. the directions dont say where to put it in, so thats just a little heads-up. hope you have skinny hands too!! you need anything else, lemme know. i did this last week.

Are you sure it is the switch. On mine this piece snapped. When you turned the key the rod attached to this piece would not actuate the starter switch. If you have to go into the top of the column, you might as well tighten up the torx bolts on the tilt mechanizm. Here is a good site for info on GM tilt columns.
