Anyone ever replace the windshield before?

How difficult is it? What tools do I need. I got hit by a pretty good size rock when I was driving about 60 mph. Scared the hell out of me. It doesn't enter my field of vision luckily but the track here will be opening soon. I'm on an EXTREMELY tight budget and I didn't plan on replacing it but I want to go to the track when it opens.

I found a place that will sell me one new for 98.42. How hard are they to install?

about $40.

Not worth the hassle, risk, and materials expense, which is close to that.

Yup, the effort greatly outweighs the expense. Unless you work for Harmon, or SafeLite, you are better off having it done by professionals.

Any decent place will be able to give you a solid quote over the phone, which includes the glass, and any seals and sealants that go with it. Most of the time the work will have some kind of guarrantee, so if it leaks, they'll fix it.

One thing to keep in mind though as I had mine removed before painting, the company (Harmon Glass) said they would NOT warranty the existing windsheild: meaning that unless I installed a brand new windsheild when I had them come back out for the re-install, if they screwed up and broke it, your just out that money. Simple as that. They will not warranty any used part. I priced a new windsheild and damn near shiiit myself when they told me $240. So, I just hope they get my old one back in without incident. If so then total for the removal/reinstallation $35.00

It depends on where you go. Most places can have you in and out within a few hours and the cost won't be so bad.

I had mine done a few years ago after an unfortunate incident at around 90 mph, a dirty *** truck with rocks flying off it on the I-40 a few years back in Arizona. I looked into it when I lived in California and I **** myself when they quoted me $400!!!!

I let it slide for awhile until it decided it finally divided my screen in 2, but didn't obstruct my vision in the same year.

When I did get it done I was back on the east coast and it cost me only $200 with installation and tax in the end. I think it was speedy auto glass or something, the same chain that quoted me $400 on the west coast... weird pricing...

You want to crap yourself!!! I had my Vette windshield replaced under insurance. With glass, weather stripping, install --- $800 bucks!!!!!!!!!

BTW: Most insurance waive the deducible if the windshield is repairable. I know USAA does if you have comprehensive.

Yeah, but you Vette guys are a different bred Probably just paid the deductable with the change in the ashtray. Hopefully you drive yours. My uncles had 2 and he put a total of (between the 2) 5500mi. The one he bought new in 84 and the other new in 88. Why have cars and not drive them? Guess that's why I'm not filthy rich like him either different thought trian going.

Man, I think a full blown dragsters have more miles then some of these Vette owner????

81,000 miles baby!!! Trying to build seat time when I can. I hope to join the Corvette high milage club someday I think it's a 150,000 miles. I have some serious seat time - to boot!!! I can bow whip that bad boy on a dime

I KNOW, 150000 miles is chump change to a 3rd gen, but for a Vette that's serious milage

Anyhow, have you seen the cost for the ZR-1 solar windshields. I heard there over a grand just for the glass !!!

BTW: I looked up the cost for the C4 rear hatch glass -- 1500 bucks new !!!!!! So don't think that a hundred bucks is lot for glass.

Yeah, my neighbours old 84 Vette had it's rear window broken with a stone thrown by a kid (that kid never was seen again) and he told me they wanted $1500 for a new one. I almost fainted, but I didn't. His 94 is always parked out of easy range now.

My dad and I replaced the windshield on my sisters 87 Camaro when we were restoring it. The windshield had a giant crack in it like someone took a bat to it. We got a new windshield from the junkyard for about $30, and had the old one out and the new one on in about an hour. My dad bought a tool from a local body supply shop for removing the windshield. It has a tiny blade at a right angle to the handle, which cuts the sealant right out. We also got a suction cup dent puller from autozone, which sucks for pulling dents out, but works great to pick up glass with. If anyone wants, I can take a pic of these tools.

With 2 people, it really is not that hard. I would never pay a shop to do this.

Hey, I had a guy come out and install mine when I finished painting my truck. He charged 150 to do the front and rear. Yes, unwarrenty so if he dropped it....

I had bought the glass and rubber before hand.

I replaced the rear window in my truck. Wasn't too hard. But I would pay some one to do it next time. When I went to take the old one out (it was a single pane, was replacing it with a slider one), I broke it into a million pieces. Which made it much easier to get out.

I did one of the large side windows on a bronco2. It wasn't worth it. have some one come out and fix it for you. Most places will do it while you wait.

Dude, it's not that hard. All you have to do is use a flat head screwdriver and pry it out.

Step 1: peal back rubber and cut and glue that may be holding window in.

Step 2: without flexxing the glass, slow pry out one of the corners

Step 3: once of of the corners is just barly outside the rubber move down the glass about a foot and slowly pry. When it's to the edge of the rubber move down another foot.

That's all there is to it. If you don't flex your glass enough you will not crack break. I've taken out the rear glass in my truck at least 3-4 times.

I second that. That is how I broke the window I was taking out of my truck. I used a very thin flat head screw driver, slid it under the rubber and gently pryed up. About 5 seconds after that, the glass shatterd.

just hoof on it with your feet from the inside and smash it outwards... or be like a buddy of mine and use a hamer and just smash all the glass... either way, its a stupid idea.
