Porting new heads

Just wondering, would you guys recommend having my heads hot tanked after I finish porting them?

Edit- Oh addiotionally, my SR Torquer ports matched the gasket perfectly out of the box. Is this normal with aftermarket heads?

I think most machine shops will put the heads through the washer before working on them.

I think SR heads are well dimensioned gasket-wise.

If all you're doing is porting them, A good scrubbing with lots of soap and water followed by a good high pressure rinsing with water will be better.

You then can wipe them down with clean papertowels
and Something like Rust Check.

Wipeing them down after will ensure you get all the fine embedded metal in your freshly ported ports.
You'll be suprized at how much residue/grit is left in the metal.
As long as they are not greasy I'd pass on the hot tanking.

The purpose of tanking is to remove baked-on stuff like carbon, and sludge/varnish. Porting won't produce any of that, so do the hot soapy water thing recommended above.

What gaskets are you matching? My ports matched better than stock heads did (centered, at least), but some material was still removed in order to make them the same size.

FWIW, I bought an LB9, thinking I would put a ZZ3 cam in it w/ported heads. Turns out it had one LB9 head and one LO3 swirl port head. The ports matched to the gasket better on the LO3 head, but as most anyone on this board will tell you, swirl ports don't flow very well at all.
