Comp recommends 986.... 1.45" outer diameter
I'm running that cam with 1.6 rockers and 987 springs (next step up) in a 305. Runs OK, for a 305.

What about these springs, they say .550 max lift.

I run the next size up Comp cam (in sig) & had to go to the 987 springs to cure valve float over 6k. This was as per Comp's techline reps reccomendation.

They are inadequate. They're 1.25" diameter. They're not going to control an agressive roller cam.
Believe the cam mfr's recommendations. They will not warranty the cam if used with inferior springs that don't meet their minimum specs, like those GM stock ones. And the engine won't run nearly as strong with valve floaters like those stock springs, as it will with something that has enough nads to do the job right.

I'm not a big fan of stock valve springs..... they're pretty weenie
Catch me sometime right after I've had to deal with yet another broken one, I'll tell you how I really feel.
