no muffler?

okay, this might sound weird, but my muffler is missing. its just not there. someone might have stole it, or something, but when i put the car up on the lift, it wasn't there. anyways, what my question is, is that is a muffler absolutely necessary, the car sounds good without one, but do you need it for performance? thanks.

How well does your car perform when it's sitting in the police impund lot? I know my car does not reach its full potential there.

Put a muffler on it.

No muffler on my 88 base. Sounds awesoime and I haven't had any probs from cops about it. Although I don't have to have a muffler in OH, just a cat and pipes.

Where exactly does the exhaust exit? Are you sure you don't have one of the tube type mufflers or exhaust inserts?

I've been muffler-less for over a year and haven't had any problems with cops or otherwise. I'm just a little slower on the takeoff when the men in blue are present.

Alright guys, running a a cat and no muffler is no big deal. Now if you ran pipes straight from the headers, no cat, no muffler you'd give yourself a headache, and probably get a ticket or two.

i always thought mufflers were there for back pressure too, but judging by how many of you dont' run one..... i guess its not needed.... and my car isn't all that loud without a muffler... so the police won't have a problem.. i have the car.... which runs through another pipe over the axel, and there is just a clamp there, so the exhaust is just coming out behind my axel. does anyone have any thoughts on this? the main thing i want to know is whether it will affect performance, and is there anything to put in place of the lack of a muffler?

NEways, I'd think that if you're running without a muffler, and the exhaust isn't louder than normal, you have some sort of restriction upstream. Like a crushed pipe, or a clogged cat.

I'd recommend a cat-back, with a new catco cat. I spent less than $300 total for my catco, and Flowmaster A.T. catback.

Car: '86 IROC, black and sharp
Engine: 305 tpi, bone stock
Transmission: 700r4
Axle/Gears: 3.42 pos w/rear db
When I got my 86 IROC (305 TPI) it didn't have a muffler. The pipe came over the axle from the converter, split and exited at the stock (dual) locations at the rear of the car. Sounded real good, too. The only problem I ever had was a regular code (32??) for the egr valve after a few miles of interstate type steady speeds of 65 or 70. Once the pipes were leaking bad enough I bought the edelbrock cat back system and installed it. No more egr codes and it still sounds pretty good (but not quite). The cat alone did not seem to have enough back pressure for the egr to work properly. The addition of a muffler fixed that. Just for info.

i have the exact problem with my 88 LB9. I have a pipe running from cat back over axle, and splits to 2 exits at factory locations with no muffler. I get a code 32 everytime im on the interstate. i am buying a catback system here pretty soon with a muffler, so hopefully that will get rid of the code 32.

I think that it sounds awesome right now, but i think that it will sound better with a 3" american thunder cat back.

We are referring to trouble codes referenced through the 'Service Engine Soon' light on the guage cluster.

You can learn more about how it works HERE and scroll to the bottom of the page.

A code 32 is a fault in the barometric pressure sensor circuit OR a fault in the exhaust gas recirculation valve diagnostic switch OR a fault in the electronic vacuum regulator valve.
