Evacuating AC in the driveway???

OK, I'm planning on removing the AC. I called aroung today to check prices on having the system evacuated. I told 4 different garages what I wanted to do and all four asked if the system had ever been recharged, which it hasn't, (1989), and how well it worked. I told them it was cooler than the "vent" air, but not by much. All four told me that it was probably about gone anyway, and doing myself was the way to go. I asked about being enviro friendly and they said that there was probably so little coolant left, that it wouldn't be a big deal. Does this sound accurate? It makes sense.

What do you guys think?

And if I do, do it myself, How do I do it? I have no idea.

Take the cap off of the accumulator(the aluminum cylinder on the passenger side) and depress the valve inside. Out will come a cold stream of freon, probably not for very long if it doesnt work well. To tell you the truth, you've probably leaked more out over the years driving the car than you're actually going to let out. Don't let it spray you.

Is that the only part to be concerned with when removing the AC? Everything else just unbolts? I want to do the same thing and already know I will need an AC delete pulley and an AC delete heater box. The compressor and what else must be removed?

I'm just gonna leave the ac box and the pulley for now because all my money is going into finishing my interior, but I can't stand not wrenching on the motor. I'm also gonna remove the AIR while I'm at it. It may not be pretty, but it's practically free, at least for now.

Don't forget the condenser, that's probably one of the heaviest a/c components. You'll have to move the radiator to get it out.
