is a 5.7 police motor

worth messing with? It has reverse flow water pump. 1994. The guy says it has TPI on it. More than likely TBI... $500. mileage unknown.

I would like to build a motor and looking for a good starting point.

5.7 police motor

LT1 for sure, but 2 bolt mains and swirl cast iron heads. I dont think it is worth messing with for an IROC because of the reverse flow, and the dist in front. I think I am going to keep on looking.

LT1s never came with tbi or swirl port heads. $500 is a steal for a running 94 fbody.

edit: I assumed it was in a car, if not..I'd forget an unknown mileage/condition engine for $500 unless you're feeling lucky.

that's correct, in 94 police package was on the camaro and caprice and the 5.7L versions were LT1. LT1 is neither TPI nore TBI. it's simply a low rise sequential injection system. an LT1 for a third gen is a good engine to build up if are up to the task of the transplant.

For what it's worth, the cast iron LT1 heads flowed BETTER on the intake side than the aluminum ones, and equal on the exhaust side. Neither of them had swirl port heads, as rezinn pointed out. On the down side, the cam in teh 'B' car LT1s was a little weaker than the 'F' and 'Y' car versions. That's the only difference. The other plus to the iron LT1 is that they allow larger valves without having to install hardened seats. Same with the better springs.

If you get the engine, make sure it comes with the PCM and wiring harness, unless you plan to eliminate the OptiSpark. It can be done with a converted intake like John Millican machines, or with the OptiSpark Eliminator. The rest of the engine can be operated with a ThirdGen ECM.

5.7 Police

Its out of a Caprice cruiser. I read that the water pump is not exchangeable for a 3rd gen install.

The information I have been able to come up with is :

Gen II LT1 reverse flow
210HP?

I'm taking a look at it on Saturday.. I will take my engine code guide with me.

Be very, very wary. Check the casting numbers carefully. Many Caprices (including 9C1 models for SEO service) used the L99 engine instead of the LT1 engine. Many local police departments chose the smaller engine for "better" fleet fuel economy, and didn't need the extra power for high-speed pursuit. The L99 is a 265 CID version of the Gen II engine. It is externally identical to the LT1. the only way to differential is through casting numbers. If the vehicle is still attached to the engine, the eighth character of the VIN should be a 'P' for an LT1. If the engine is out of the vehicle, it should be very easy to check the casting numbers.

Look for a 10125327 casting number on the rear ledge.

EDIT: A 265 (L99) can be easily identified by the head casting number of 10208890. It was the only engine to get that head.
