all you LG4 racers out there...

ok, so the my is still in the garage for winter..but now im wondering...
using the stock carbed LG4 what is the fastest i can make it doing normal power swaps??? i am going to begin building the new engine when i get the block..but it will be a long time before im done. So how fast are you guys doing in the carbed LG4's? anyone doing mid 14's or what not? and if so what is the set up? i figure i can put some money into the stock engine and have fun while im working on the new engine in the mean time. I rather have a kinda decent running car then have a turd like it is now. and i can always add a lil nitrious if need be, but rather have it all motor

Well, just to give you a starting point, back before I had my 355, I had a completely stock LG4 in my 84 Camaro, except for a K&N filter, and a freshly rebuilt Quadrajet. It had a 700R4 trans and a 3.08 OPEN rear end. With no traction, and shifting it manually, I ran a 16.7 @ 79 MPH. Oh the days before the 355.......sigh......
Good luck!!!

Not too long ago I've seen a older guy pull a 14.2 in the 1/4
(300 ft above sea level) with an 86 Camaro LG4 with a T-5 But it was a rebuilt block with High compression pistons and a mechanical Carter AFB feeding the engine engine. It was a 305 since he showed me the casting 5.0LG So I guess anything is possible. Although it was a base model camaro and it's probably light weight

Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Specs on mine:
1983 SC w/T-top
1984 vintage LG4 with 225,000 miles(!).
Heads have never been off it.
Low compression 8.4:1 (or something like that).
Small RV cam with .420" valve lift both intake and exhaust, duration unknown as it was pulled from another engine.
Hedman headers, y-pipe, no cat, Dynomax 2 3/4" cat-back.
RAM S/R clutch with over 110,000 miles on it.
T5 and a 3.42 open rear spinning 235/60 R15 Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTS rear tires.
Stock non-CC Q-Jet with DR secondary rods and 'N' hanger.
80-81 Z28 style 'glass hoodscoop and hood cut to provide functional Cowl Induction effect.
Swapped elctric fan on in place of original fly-swatter.
Only chassis mod is a set of boxed, stock LCA's.

Car was in full street trim with sub box and all in back and 3/4 tank of 87 fuel.
Chassis needs more work, as evidenced by the poor 60' times, as shown in my timeslip in my sig....

probably get some nice power out of a LG4 with the following, this is my plan.

new headers, hi-flo cat, any cat-back, edelbrock intake with tuned Q-jet, and some ported heads.... and perhaps some nitrous oxide for extra power.... anyways, that's my plan for my LG4

Make sure to get a decent cam. The Comp XE 256 is good, as is the XE 262, or even the XE 250 (which would purr like a kitten on the street).

I use the Crane PowerMax 260 and it has a lot of get up and go.

Heads are an absolute must for an LG4, so follow the link at the end of my sig for the cheapest and fastest/$$$ spent home ports.

But if you need to redo the shortblock, forget it. Go 350 because it will give more hp and cost no more.

LG4 and racing... doesn't seem to go togehter

quick mods though
headers, cat back, decent cam like the xe262 or maybe one a little smaller, if you want to crack the block you can get higher comp pisonts that would put you around the 9.5 range,

My LG4 in my 83 Trans Am ran a 14.86@91mph at sea level here in Phoenix. The only mods were 3.73's, Edelbrock headers and catback. Ran consistent 14.80's-14.90's all day long with 110,000 miles and a goofy 700R4.

hmm, my l69 has 9.5 to 1 comp. ratio

with some ported stock heads, headers and a nice cam you should be happy

"crack the block" IE: open it up and rebuild it.

I ran a 14.94 @ 91.67mph with my 86 LG4 T5.
Only mods on it at the time were:
Edelbrock 1406 Carb
Edelbrock 7101 Intake
Edlebrock Open Element Air Cleaner
I think I had the K&N at the time, don't remember though.
Stock 3.27 gears
Stock Manifolds
Stock Exhaust with a Flowmaster Muffler
MSD HEI Coil
and 130K miles on it.

Oh, and this was also my very first time at a drag strip.
First run was a 15.12 @ 92.80.
15.20 @ 90.97
15.10 @ 91.14
15.04 @ 90.40
14.94 @ 91.67
14.97 @ 91.88
14.97 @ 92.03

I think that is awesome for a first time AND having a manual.
