Should I remove power steering?

Out of my Iron Duke Camaro? Does it really rob you of power? Just removed the A/C, heater today. Boy...what a difference. Can actually see/work on the dist.

I'm not too sure about how much power you'll gain, but have you ever driven a car that was ment to have power steering but doesn't? Man it sucks! My first car was an old Honda Accord and I drove that thing for like 2 months without the power steering in it, until I got a new pump for it. And that car weighed next to nothing. At high speeds it's not too bad but you need to be a frickin' weight lifter to try to get in a parking spot. IMO, keep it on. The convince of having it will outweight the power gain.

Yes and it saves 30 lbs too. Just make sure you replace the steering box with a manual unit....
otherwise it may be too hard to steer.

I know my car's power is next to nothing. It's already a simple car, not having A/C or radio. Since this car will be seeing "spare car" duty for the rest of it's life, last thing I need is to replace this and that. Power steering pump might go out, but then again, might not. Trying to make this car as simple as possible with the least headaches. And make it a pubic hair quicker too in the process.

yea, just pulling the pump off sucks, you definately want to switch to a manual steering box instead of just disconnecting the p/s pump

leave the power steering alone, its way to hard to drive with out it, i drove mine for a month without it, i would have rather walked..parking...ha forget..im sure u dont gain that much power from it that makes it better to not have it, anyway if all it is is spare car why does it matter if its quick or not? What most of you aren't realising is that he isn't talking about unhooking the pump and driving it. he is talking about swapping a non PS steering box from an s10 and removing the whole PS system.

How about looking in S-10s?
There's lots of them in junkyards. Supposedly most if not all of the 4-cyl ones came with manual steering. It's impoosible to believe tha tthere are no S-10s where you are; I've even seen them in Europe and West Africa.

Power steering does not rob any power unless your turning, so it won't help you go faster other than the little bit of weight you will lose, you won't see any gain from changing it to manual, at least not that you can really feel, it might pick up .05 sec. at the track.
