Cleaning oil leaks?

I've got leaks. As far as I can tell from looking under, I need to replace the rear main and the valve cover gaskets....hopefully that will solve it.

But, my question is. How do you guys get rid of oil all over the engine and underneath the vehical. It was like that before I bought it, so it hasnt been cleaned except slightly by me and a power washer.

Does that GUNK spray and some shop towels do the trick?

I use a chemical blower that uses air press and has a siphon hose.
Mineral spirits cleans the oil off pretty well and is cheap.
Also evaporates quickly.
Only down-side is it makes a mess on your floor.

If you have a local DIY car wash with a hi pressure hose in your area that usually will get the job done. just take a few dollars in quarters open the hood and have fun. you should cover your distibuter, alt and intake first.

I use that Gunk degreaser. Spray the underneath, leave it on for about 10 minutes then rinse it with a hose. IMO it does a very good job and I can do it right in my driveway.

Your rear main leak may actually be the pan gasket at the rear bearing saddle, a distributor, rear oil gallery plug, oil pressure switch, intake, etc. A lot of things that leak will gravity toward the rear main area. Once you get it cleaned off well, you should be able to make a better determination.

I'd vote for the DIY car wash idea for the majority of the mess. Let them have the mess on their floor...

Definitely take it to the DIY car wash, with a can of GUNK.

If you happen to have oil spills in your driveway..gasoline works very very well.....gasoline and a good scrub-brush....like a deck brush or one of theo bath tub scrubbies

u can just spray high pressure water onto your engine and not harm anything? assuming u cover the alt, distributor, and maybe ignition coil? anything else u should cover? are u sure its perfectly fine to do that?
