Testing Ignition Modules...

Ok you guys know how you can go to autozone and test ign. modules...right? Well they put it on some machine with the appropriate harness for the # of pins your module has. Then they turn it on and let it get warm, it takes like 3 mins.

I have a stalling problem only when the motor is hot, so I went through the carb and pretty much all else, so I got 3 ign. modules from the pick-a-part the other day.

Should I test tham all and leave them on for like 10 mins instead of just letting them get 'warm'? I would think they need to be pretty darn hot since the one installed in my car now must get really hot, and that is possibly why it could be failing.

i wouldnt trust those tests... alot of the modules that test as being "good" are dead right off the bat and dont work at all in the car. If your going to replace the module, just get another new module if you can.

Proform makes a good hi-po module for our cars. About $30 US.

In my experiences, a module will got out after extend high RPM's for say 5 min. (donut sessions). The car will run really rough for about 2-3 min. afterwards, feathering the thottle at idle, then the car will stall and Not start back up. I had this happen twice with cheap modules, and they were both tested at VatoZone to confirm they were toast. The last time I replaced one, (about 2.5 yrs. and alot of track burnout time later) I bought the more expensive module and it has been good so far. So, I guess the testing at autoparts stores has been good to me for modules, but for other things well...

Have you tried looking at anything else that might be your problem? A good place to start is looking at the plugs to see how the engine is running. Then go from there.

Oh, be sure to use the dielectric grease if you get a new module.
