Manual Tranny Maintenance (Gear Oil?)

I've got an 89 305 TPI with the t5 "world class." How do I check and add gear oil? I've noticed that after a couple months of driving the shifting is a bit rougher, and I'm wondering if I have a slow leak or other problem. In the past It's gotten back to where it should be after an oil change, but I did the last change myself, so I'm thinking maybe the shop also topped off my other fluids which I didn't do.

There really isn't a problem in gear, its just that I feel a little more resistence when actually moving between gears, no grinding or chatter.. but I'd like to make sure my car is healthy! Thanks for any replies.

i believe there is an inspection/fill plug on the left side of the case. you can also remove the shifter and fill thru it, but you'll not know the fluid level. your transmission should use ATF and not gear lube, check to be sure before you fill it.

Ede is correct you should be using ATF not gear lube. I recommend you drain the entire transmission and refill it with a synthetic or at least a semi-synthetic ATF fluid.

I bought a small pump used to fill I/O drives on a boat and it fits a quart bottle so you can pump the new oil into the transmission as opposed to trying a funnel or removing the shifter. I have also used the pump from a bottle of hand soap but the pump for the I/O unit works best.

You could also remove the shifter and pour it in through the top.

The best method for filling the tranny I have found is to remove the shifter trim plate and use a funnel with a tube. It is quick and more comfortable than lying on your back. T-5's take 3.5 quarts of ATF and if it has gear oil in it, I would pour a quart or two in and let it drain out to flush out the gear oil.
