Installing a 14x4 open air element (K&N)-question within

For whoever has done this mod, did you remove the gold spacer before installing the air filter or did you keep it on there? Also, where is the best place to relocate the IAT sensor ( i know it should be a cool place, so maybe right under my cowl hood next to the windshield? ) and how should i go about doing this? thanks

Mods:Hooker Aerochamber 3" exhaust, gutted kitty,
March 2 piece underdrive pullies, smog pump gone,;these two made a very noticable difference.

Eibach springs with KYB's are already installed up front. Gonna work on the rear soon.
Appearance: Harwood cowl hood, Z-28 wing, painted black-original color was light blue)

Stock Options:117,000 miles on motor, 5spd, TBI, 305, T-tops
Going to the track this summer, but i'm pretty sure i'm still in the 16's on the 1/4 mile (or maybe not any more)

I left the spacer on, I also had to cut a snip out of it and then I just cut a hole through the open element and put it in there.

If you use a drop-base air cleaner, you must retain the ring.
If you use a level-base air cleaner, you don't need the ring and flow is improved.
I mounted the IAT using an old spark plug loom bracket, just hog ouot the plastic to match the sensor diameter and mount it on the firewall, or in another path of fresh air.
