Engine missing after high RPM run

Hi,
I have an 89 RS Camaro.Has a 305 ,, 5 speed without A/C.
I ercently tuned it up by replacing the distributer cap, rotor,Coil,Wires.I took it out for a test run and it ran like silk.No misses at all.I came to a stop and thoguh I'd give it a run through a couple gears. When I hit high rpm's b4 I shifted the engine seemed to bog down a little.Right after that I had a steady miss as if only 1 cyclinder was not firing. Not a jerking type miss....Just a steady type miss. When I got home and lifted the hood I can hear a ticking sound on the drivers side valve cover.
It's not a spark jumping,,,as I checked that.WHat could it be ????? and can it be the cause of my miss ????
Thanks in advance for any suggesestions you can give me.

Kid-89,

Welcome to ThirdGen.org!

What kind of RPM were you getting at/between shifts? I'd suspect a little valve float and/or valve train damage if the engine is basically stock.

There are some other possibilities, but what RPM and how long were you at that RPM?

If i remember right it was in the red line,,,think it was around 7 to 8000.It did this before and went away after a couple days.I have'nt drove it since to see if it still does it.When it clears up I can accelerate pretty quick as long as I dont let it get into high rpm b4 shift and it will run smooth. When I really crank it hard it gets the miss and stays there for awhile when druiving at normal speeds in town.Oh and the engine is completely stock....no modifications that I know of.

You mean you were running a STOCK 305 at 7000-8000 RPM?!?!

You probably broke valvetrain parts, if not worse.

The HIGHEST you want to go on a stock 305 like that is 5000 RPM if memory serves correctly. ANY higher and you run the risk of breaking valvesprings, rocker arms, or worse.

The red part of the tach means DO NOT hit me.

I hope you didnt ruin your engine.

Kid-89,

I would strongly advise you to remove the rocker cover on the offending side (if not both) and inspect closely for valve stem, push rod, valve spring, or rocker slot/stud damage. A stock valve train, even with the weakling springs, isn't that well suited to much over 6,000 RPM excursions for very long or very often without damage. You may have even pulled a stud or hammered a retainer/valve keepers into the seals and damaged the retainers or stem. There may not be ANY damage, but there just as easily could be, and the noise you are hearing should be telling you something.

its common, when u punch a 305 it will hit 7000 or 7000 rpms, it wont hurt it at first it will in the long run if u run it like that for a long time, but a stock with low mileage 305 will hold up to me, trust me, i got one,
