Blue Smoke from Ex Manifold Area

89, IROC 5.7 TPI, 89,900 miles--
400 miles ago a crate 350 was installed along with rebuilt injectors. Since then, I have a tap coming from the driver side head area. It sounds like exhuast tap, but the manifolds have been tightened down good. I have checked the hoses going into the AIR tubes and they are tight. It could be vacuum, but when I start the car and watch near the master cylinder, I see blue smoke billow up. Just a puff. Then the tapping starts and continues until I shut down. What am I missing, any ideas?

That sounds like an ex. leak.

Just because the ex. manifolds are tight doesn't mean they aren't warped.

Did you use gaskets??

When I install most motors I have the ex. manifolds surfaced and DON"T use any gaskets.

No problems. Never have to worry about gasket leaks.

When I build a motor with manifolds, I also follow the factory's good example in that area, and use no gaskets when possible. The temperature variations are extreme between the heads and manifolds, so the parts are constantly changing sizes and moving. Gaskets tend to get chewed up in a relatively short time.

Take engineboy's advice; remove that manifold, make sure the surface is flat, put it back with no gasket, it will be as good as new. Any local machine shop that can plane a head can true the surface for you for very few coins.

alright, youve covered the noise, but ignored the puff of blue smoke at startup.. remember its a new motor.. was it a shortblock? if so did you do anything with the heads before reusing them?

Puff of blue smoke out the leak = puff of blue smoke out the tailpipe when the leak is fixed. No mystery there. The valve guide seals aren't perfect (they rarely are), I wouldn't worry too much about it.

The crate engine was a stock long block. The manifolds were planed down, (maybe not right? I didn't do it) and no gaskets were used. Could this puff be a caused by a manifold leak? If so would it just puff once at start up and not again until the next start up?

Thanks!
